Bringing ‘Sexy’ Back to Treasury: Changing Perceptions of Finance Functions w/ David Hanna

On todays episode Danny is joined by David Hanna the CEO and co-founder of Finmo.

David has over 20 years of expertise in the financial services and payments sector. Prior to founding Finmo, he held global leadership roles in Risk and Compliance for Financial Services companies headquartered in various locations globally.

David has held senior roles across companies such as PayPal, Ernst & Young, Zurich, ING Bank, Banxa and others. He serves on several advisory boards and has invested in many startups around the world.

Finmo is a global B2B treasury management platform that is focused on providing the necessary tools for the “CFO Office” including finance teams, CFOs, and treasurers. The business provides a single platform to enable the core elements of treasury to be managed from one place.

Finmo does this by providing four core modules to its clients which are;

  • Money movement
  • Cash management, including AR/AP modules
  • FX Hedging capabilities
  • Integrations into existing accounting and enterprise software

Following 20+ years of working across the financial services industry with founders from organisations such as PayPal, Citi, and other big names, the Finmo exec team realized that everyone has a treasury problem!

In identifying this problem, we believe there is a significant gap in the market for a solution that serves the end-to-end treasury management lifecycle.

In this podcast, David shares his insights on what pushed him to not just shift gears - but start a company in the often overlooked world of treasury, plus:

  • Treasury has become a top concern for many. Why is this problem so critical today? And why David thinks it’s been underserved for so long?
  • How Finmo are making treasury “sexy”? What’s different about how Finmo approaches this space compared to traditional players or even newer fintechs?
  • What does Finmo’s journey say about the next generation of fintech coming out of Asia? And what are the unique challenges and opportunities building here vs. elsewhere?
  • Finmo recently raised their Series A with Insignia Ventures. What did David learn from the fundraising process - and how is he thinking about growth and scaling post-raise?
  • Starting up is intense. What keeps David energized and focused as a founder, especially when solving a problem that’s massive but not always flashy?
  • What excites David the most about the future of finance and treasury in this "borderless" business world?
  • And much more...

How to scale a fintech startup in an emerging market w/ Tessa Wijaya COO @ Xendit

To launch a new season of Digital Transformation & Leadership we've got a special episode recorded live from the MoneyPot podcast studio at Money20/20 Asia in Bangkok.

Danny talks to Tessa Wijaya the COO at Indonesian fintech Xendit, the expanding payments gateway.

On top of being a driving force for the company’s growth, Tessa is also a passionate advocate for more women in tech; she initiated Xendit’s Women in Tech Indonesia program, where entrepreneurs and tech professionals share experiences in workshops and digital forums.

Unlisted Xendit doesn’t disclose its profits, but it has clearly gained the confidence of many venture capital firms. In September 2021, Xendit became a unicorn after it raised $150 million in series C funding, bumping up its valuation to $1 billion.

Xendit helps businesses get what’s due to them from payment channels such as credit cards, online wallets, QR codes and other tools for electronic purchases. Xendit’s website says that in fewer than five minutes, it can set up an account for a business to start receiving digital payments. In Indonesia, the company competes with Doku and Goto’s Midtrans.

From fewer than 10 employees at the start, the company now has more than 900. Xendit, which initially focused on Indonesia, has expanded to the Philippines and is eyeing other parts of Southeast Asia.

In the episode Danny and Tessa discuss:

    • How Xendit has navigated local payment preferences and integrated them with existing payment infrastructures to facilitate seamless transactions.
    • Many individuals in emerging markets may be skeptical of new financial technologies or lack the necessary knowledge to use them effectively. How Xendit has gone about overcoming these challenges.
    • The fintech industry is highly competitive, with both local and international players vying for market share. Fintech startups in emerging markets face competition from traditional financial institutions, established tech companies, and other startups. How has Xendit has overcome this to stand out in the market.

Then in part 2 of the episode Tessa talks through her entrepreneurial journey sharing what she is most proud of, the biggest risk she's taken in her career, how you go about finding strong mentors, how to find the right work/life balance, and her big career lesson.
