Each season will be made up of 5 one on one long-form discussions, between selected authorities and myself. Tracing a chronological time-line, from the beginnings of that culture up until present day.

For the debut season of Dancethropology,
we will be taking an in-depth look at the minds behind some of Melbourne’s now extinct, iconic underground night spots.
In some ways they are all akin to places of worship in their own right. These essential tombs of culture have faced an interesting change with the advent of technology. The venues left standing, face a whole new raft of challenges especially now with the current state of social distancing.
Nightclubs have long been cultural & creative incubators, spaces free of judgement and filled with every type of person imaginable.
A place where weirdness & self expression is encouraged and celebrated, allowing the curious minds the freedom to express themselves, without fear of discrimination. To be able to freely experiment & make new connections, that in some instances went on to launch entire careers & industries.

We come full circle with our last episode, Focussing on Melbourne's most recent extinct & possibly last truly free venue HUGS & KISSES, i sat down with Hugo Atkins to relive the last 9 years in melbourne town!
The Mercat started operating at the very crack of melbourne’s rave dawn, the 90’s,
and while the club started off techno and futuristic sounds it was also home to some great dnb & dub nights, that ended up being the meeting ground for quite a few of Melbourne’s key players in the next iteration of Melbourne's scene.

I sat down and spoke to Daragh Kan. The last person left holding the torch at the historic Melbourne pub/club. Daragh was the one of the founders of Animals Dancing, currently runs no less than 20 hospo venues, and is a bit of a marketing & design wizz and presents a realistic view of what it takes to operate your own venue in past ten years.
"Lounge" was an institution in melbourne clubbing. From "Filter" through to "Pleasure Planet." It's central city location made it the perfect hub for 30 years in Melbourne's night time economy.
