Cut Outs
Mark Farrell
32 episodes
Mark Farrell is just some guy - a guy who has been in far too many bands. Which bands? None you've heard of. And that's the point. He gets it. Mark knows what it is to lug gear, and play to half-empty rooms. And all these years later, Mark has never stopped rooting for the unsung musicians who never got the break they deserved. He haunts record stores looking for lost alt-rock treasures, unearthing DIY releases and short runs of great records that went largely unspun. Quite simply, Mark is on a mission to rescue the best indie albums from the discount bins of history.

Cut Outs
The Estranged

On this episode of Cut Outs, I chat with Mark of The Estranged about the bands 2008 debut album, Static Thoughts. We discuss the bands history, as well was all the 80's influences needed to write great hooks in the late 2000's. This may be the best post-punk album that didn't exist when I was getting into post-punk.

Cut Outs
Waxing Poetic: Static Radio

On this episode of Cut Outs, Brendan, Brian, and I present you with another fantastic episode of Waxing Poetic. We discuss Static Radio's 12" EP, 2017's Resentiments. This is the episode where Brian's mic stops working, and it keeps cutting out, and I try and edit it like I don' t think my listeners will notice, and you notice anyway. So...

Please follow and review the podcast. It helps me out, somehow. I'm still trying to figure that part out.

Waxing Poetic: Sea Monkeys

On this episode of Cut Outs, Brendan, Brian, and I jump right back into another episode of Waxing Poetic, where we talk about Sea Monkeys' 1996 EP, Wide Awake! With Sea Monkeys. This one is Brendan's pick, whether he likes it or not! Honestly, I still can't tell if he does.

Cut Outs
Errth

On this episode of Cut Outs, I talk with Tim from the NJ band Errth about their 2025 self-titled debut. This one is an interesting find, in that I had already interviewed another member of this band about another band he was in before he was in this band. It's sounds confusing, but you managed to figure out the three endings to Clue, so I am sure you'll figure this out, too.

The States

On this episode of Cut Outs, I talk with Barry, lead guitar player for Tidewater, Virginia's own The States about their sophomore outing, Picture Me With You. We talk about the history of the band, major label bidding wars, and the sigh of relief you feel when everyone in the band you're covering shows up...except the one guy you need to impress.

Cut Outs
Waxing Poetic: Party Photographers

On this episode of Cut Outs, Brendan, Brian, and I slip into another episode of Waxing Poetic, where we discuss Party Photographers' 2010 self-titled EP. Brendan and I were instantly brought back to 1990 with these tunes while Brian, as always, did all the heavy lifting. This is dirty shoegaze at it's finest, kids.

Cut Outs
Young Offenders

On this episode of Cut Outs, my good friend Brendan and have a little chat with the boys in Young Offenders. We reviewed an EP of theirs last year, and decided we needed to have a few questions answered about their only full length album, 2010's Leader of the Followers. The mysteries of Thrasher Magazine are finally reveled, and we talk about album covers...through no fault of my own.

Swallow

On this episode of Cut Outs, I talk with a few of the gents in Seattle's Swallow about their 1989 self-titled debut. We discuss the PNW grunge scene at the time, nearly unreleased albums, and van breakdowns. Hell, I talk a lot about van incidents on this podcast, but it kind of comes with the territory.

On this episode of Cut Outs, I talk with all the boys in Buffalo, New York's Failures Union about their last full length album, Tethering. We go over the recording of the record, touring, and the album cover. Because it's an album cover. In addition, I am so genuinely confused as to when this album came out, I even screw it up in the introduction. Classic me!

RSD2024 Recap

Just a short episode to recap my 2024 Record Store Day. Brendan, Brian, Jon, Mike, and I hit a few record stores in the Maryland area, and I had the opportunity to speak with a few of the record shop owners. I did not, on the other hand, pick up Blur's Parklife. Such is life. I did pick up a few albums that I hope to cover on the show, so stay tuned!
