Nell’ultimo tratto di Via Montebello, proprio in prossimità delle mura aureliane, il palazzo che venne inaugurato il 1889 per ospitare l’Istituto scolastico San Leone Magno dei Frati Maristi francesi a Roma, oggi, completamente rinnovato, ospita l’elegante Hotel The Building.

In the last stretch of Via Montebello, right next to the Aurelian walls, the building that was inaugurated in 1889 to house the San Leone Magno school of the French Marist Friars in Rome, today, completely renovated, houses the elegant Hotel The Building.

Nei giardini dell’Hotel Palazzo Montemartini a Largo Montemartini affiorano dei resti dell’antica cinta muraria romana detta “mura serviane”, precedente all’altra e più recente cinta muraria nota come “mura aureliane”. Questa antica cinta muraria realizzata da Servio Tullio nel VI secolo aC fu estesa e consolidata dopo il sacco di Roma del 390 aC ad opera dei Galli.

In the gardens of the Hotel Palazzo Montemartini in Largo Montemartini, there are remains of the ancient Roman city walls called the “Servian Walls”, which precede the other and more recent one known as the “Aurelian Walls”. This ancient city wall built by Servius Tullius in the 6th century BC was extended and consolidated after the sack of Rome in 390 BC by the Gauls.

In corrispondenza di Largo Montemartini si affaccia oggi il lussuoso Hotel Palazzo Montemartini, ma quel complesso edilizio risalente al 1928 in precedenza era la sede dell’Agenzia del trasporto autoferrotranviario del Comune di Roma (ATAC) e ingloba anche , dove Via Gaeta fa un curva, un Serbatoio idrico per l’innaffiatura.

Today, the luxurious Hotel Palazzo Montemartini overlooks Largo Montemartini, but that building complex dating back to 1928 was previously the headquarters of the Rome Municipality's rail, tram and bus transport agency (ATAC) and includes a water tank for irrigation where Via Gaeta bends.

Il settore sud-orientale del Rione Castro Pretorio è completamente destinato ad uso militare e su Via del Castro Pretorio si affaccia un vasto complesso recentemente ristrutturato e riqualificato, che alla fine dell’800 costituiva la Caserma di artiglieria dedicata al figlio di Carlo Alberto di Savoia, Ferdinando, da poco scomparso.

The south-eastern sector of the Castro Pretorio district is entirely intended for military use and overlooking Via del Castro Pretorio is a large complex recently renovated and redeveloped, which at the end of the 19th century constituted the artillery barracks dedicated to the son of Carlo Alberto of Savoy, Ferdinando, who had recently passed away.

L’area quadrangolare nel settore nord-orientale del Rione Castro Pretorio in epoca romana era la sede dei Castra Paetoria dove risiedeva il principale corpo della guardia imperiale: la Guardia Pretoriana. Ancora oggi l’area è in gran parte destinata ad usi militari ed ospita la Caserma Macao e la Caserma Pio IX.

The quadrangular area in the north-eastern sector of the Castro Pretorio district in Roman times was the seat of the Castra Paetoria where the main body of the imperial guard resided: the Praetorian Guard. Even today the area is largely used for military purposes and is home to the Macao Barracks and the Pio IX Barracks.

Tra i palazzi che si affacciano su Piazza dell’Indipendenza, all’angolo con Via dei Mille ce n’è uno moderno, dove ha sede il gruppo editoriale Corriere dello Sport - Stadio. Intorno ad esso tuttavia si affacciano altri edifici che testimoniano le trasformazioni urbanistiche sulla piazza. A volte si tratta di villini ottocenteschi, più o meno rimaneggiati, a volte di altri edifici moderni.

Among the buildings that overlook Piazza dell’Indipendenza, on the corner with Via dei Mille there is a modern one, where the Corriere dello Sport - Stadio publishing group is based. Around it, however, there are other buildings that bear witness to the urban transformations on the square. Sometimes they are nineteenth-century villas, more or less remodeled, sometimes other modern buildings.

Altro importante Villino posto a Piazza dell’Indipendenza, fatto costruire da Alessandro Centurini nel 1874 e divenuto nel 1935 Istituto scolastico di istruzione superiore: prima Liceo “Giulio Cesare”, poi Istituto Magistrale “Alfredo Oriani” e infine, dopo il 2000, Liceo Machiavelli.

Another important villa located in Piazza dell’Indipendenza, built by Alessandro Centurini in 1874 and which became a higher education institute in 1935: first the “Giulio Cesare” high school, then the “Alfredo Oriani” teacher training institute and finally, after 2000, the Machiavelli high school.

Grande edificio posto in Piazza Indipendenza, all’angolo tra Via San Martino della Battaglia e Via Bachelet (già Via Varese) che ospita la sede del Consiglio Superiore della Magistratura. Oggi si chiama Palazzo Bachelet, dal nome del giudice martire del terrorismo nel 1980, ma è più conosciuto con il nome precedente, cioè Palazzo dei Marescialli.

Large building located in Piazza Indipendenza, on the corner of Via San Martino della Battaglia and Via Bachelet (formerly Via Varese) which houses the headquarters of the Superior Council of the Judiciary. Today it is called Palazzo Bachelet, from the name of the judge martyred by terrorism in 1980, but it is better known by its previous name, Palazzo dei Marescialli.

Imponente palazzo che si affaccia su Piazza Indipendenza, tra Via Goito e Via Curtatone. Alla fine dell’800 in quel sito sorgeva il prestigioso Villino Servadio, ma negli anni 50 del ‘900 la potente Federazione Italiana dei Consorzi Agrari decise di costruire la sua sede in stile razionalista, unendo arte e architettura.

An imposing building overlooking Piazza Indipendenza, between Via Goito and Via Curtatone. At the end of the 19th century, the prestigious Villino Servadio stood on that site, but in the 1950s, the powerful Italian Federation of Agricultural Consortia decided to build its headquarters in a rationalist style, combining art and architecture.

Seconda piazza per importanza nel Rione Castro Pretorio dopo Piazza della Repubblica, ma centrale nella vita del Rione stesso, fin dalla prima ideazione del Quartiere del Macao come venne denominata la zona intorno alla piazza a partire dal 1870.
