On our latest #Miikeversary Special, we are joined by returning guest Jason from Dads from the Crypt, as we talk about one of Takashi Miike’s earlier works: Fudoh: The New Generation. Originally intended as a direct-to-video adaptation of an unfinished manga series, the producers of Fudoh were so impressed by the film that they insisted it premiere in theaters in 1996, and it’s easy to see why with Miike’s penchant for Yakuza stories, as well as his talent for cinematography and adapting wacky, edgy plots so far out they could only come from a manga. Collateral Cinema is back with yet another At the Movies review; within a week of the debut of the DCU with Superman, we also got the latest MCU installment: The Fantastic Four: First Steps! On this momentous occasion, Derik from Ratchet Book Club and A Seat at the Spades Table joins Beau and Ashley as a first-time watcher of the 2003 independent film often called ”the Citizen Kane of bad movies”. It would be a massive understatement to call Wiseau’s magnum opus The Room important to Collateral Cinema; it’s practically the reason we started podcasting together in the first place! We took the opportunity to hear Derik’s fresh take moments after the experience and share our thoughts on why this film is not only so important to us, but to cinema and pop culture as a whole. Originally released as a Christian picture titled Tell Your Children in 1936, then vulgarly recut as an exploitation film from 1938 through the 50s, this hilariously melodramatic flick was recontextualized as an unintentional satire in the 70s, and is ironically considered by many weed smokers one of the original stoner movies today. For our (belated) 4/20 Special, Beau and Ash are joined by returning guests Kevin and Erin from The Podcast That Wouldn’t Die! in our discussion of one of the worst films ever made and the batshit insanity it unabashedly presents as factual in its campaign against marijuana. Gotta go fast! ...Except we weren’t. We sort of dropped the ball on releasing an At the Movies review while Sonic the Hedgehog 3 was in theaters, and we didn’t mention it on the Year in Review episode, but since Collateral Media has covered both of the previous films, we just couldn’t not talk about the latest—and possibly greatest—one. So, once again, Collateral Gaming joins Collateral Cinema for a discussion of Jeff Fowler’s newest Sonic movie, and this time we can get into full spoilers! With the addition of fan favorite Keanu Reeves to the cast as Shadow the Hedgehog, and the return of Jim Carrey for not just one Robotnik role, but two, it’s sure to be a blast! We’ll have even more content out very soon, such as our Ghost in the Shell (1995) episode with the Retro Anime Podcast, as well as our analysis of The California Kid.

2024 saw the release of a plethora of new films! So many, in fact, we missed covering a lot on Collateral Cinema At the Movies. Just like last year, we decided to rectify that with a discussion on a few movies we watched together, quick reviews on several we saw on our own, and even a mention of a few that are still on our list. Finally, we wrap it up with our individual picks for Best Picture at the Collateral Cinema Awards! This year, we are covering two films: Samurai Cop, the 1991 direct-to-video film that attained a cult following, and its indie sequel crowdfunded in 2015, Samurai Cop 2: Deadly Vengeance. Starring the likes of Mathew Karedas, Robert Z’Dar, Mark Frazer, and even Tommy fucking Wiseau himself, these two so-bad-it’s-good flicks have somehow passed us by over the years despite being exactly the Collateral Cinema bailiwick! On our belated Holiday Special collab with Collateral Cinema, Zach and Ash discuss the video game tie-in for the 2000 How the Grinch Stole Christmas film. Released the same year for the PS1, DreamCast, and PC, this platforming game may be nostalgic for some of our listeners, and we had a great time playing it this holiday season!
