In this chapter, EU Code Week meets the European Space Agency, ESA on Education. Listen to discover what made the ESA Educators join this task, how ESA sees that SPACE can transform Education in Europe, by educating students from primary school to PHD level with challenging coding tasks and ways to make your projects (literally) be launched into SPACE. ESA shares how digital skills can be applied to something that seems as unreachable as space and by participating in one challenge be engaged to the topic of space forever, even for people that studied Humanities. The way ESA educates aims to enriching technologically our society, for students interested in STEM and beyond. In this episode, Ibrahim Oussari, founder and CEO of Molengeek, shares his inspiring story. Born in Molenbeek to Moroccan immigrant parents and having left school at 13, Ibrahim became a successful entrepreneur. He launched several companies and became a local role model, advocating for accessible technology education. Molengeek, based in Brussels, has grown into a pan-European project with centers in multiple European and African cities, providing opportunities for young people to engage in technology and entrepreneurship.

In our first episode for 2024, we had the pleasure of engaging in a fascinating conversation with Koen Timmers. Let’s meet the protagonist of this new Episode of EU Code Week podcasts: Peter Joziasse. Peter, a social entrepreneur, is very active in culture, youth participation and digital child rights in livable, smart cities. Volunteer of UNICEF and founder of the Digital Child Rights Foundation. We discussed how digitalchildrights.org started and how giving children opportunities and chances in the digital world is so important. His approach revolves around two main principles: give young people, opportunities in the digital world and, secondly, give children a voice.

Our guest today is Lidija Kralj is a UNESCO and European Commission expert in data and AI in education, and she used to work as a computer science and mathematics teacher. We discussed about challenges and misperceptions regarding A.I. and how is still a new environment especially for teachers. Nevertheless, AI has a lot of potential for teaching and learning, but there are a lot of challenges and risks.

The first one has been working as a software engineer for about ten years in the private sector, before entering the field of education. Though boys and girls use technology similarly regarding learning how to code, male students have always constituted the majority of students in this topic area. Recently, various initiatives and some very smart educators pushing for more girls in coding are tackling this gender gap and gender levelling up in the CODING FIELD. Then we head over to Cyprus to learn about the Cyprus Computer History Museum, a computing museum that feeds off female role models in the history of science and technology!
