SE2EP2 - Breaking the Silence: Understanding GBV in our Community

Gender-Based Violence (also known as GBV), is a pervasive issue that affects individuals, families, and communities worldwide. It's a complex phenomenal that requires a multifaceted approach, involving government, civil society, and individuals.

Despite its prevalence, GBV remains a taboo topic, shrouded in silence and stigma. Today, we're breaking that silence and exploring the realities of GBV in our communities.

So, join us as we discuss GBV prevention, its effects, and available response channels. By highlighting the progress made in addressing GBV and the areas that still need improvement, we aim to emphasize the crucial importance of combating GBV in Nigeria.

In this episode, we will be discussing the experiences, successes, and challenges of GBV. We will also explore how PWAN has helped create a safe living environment and how we have supported Beneficiaries in overcoming their trauma.

To discuss this important topic, I are joined by our colleague, Nana Hauwa Isa, a Program Officer at the Niger state office at PWAN. Nana has extensive experience working with GBV survivors and has been instrumental in developing and implementing programs that address the root causes of GBV.

SE02EP1 - Launch of a New Season

Hello all, and welcome to Citizens’ Rights and Security, the podcast that keeps you informed on citizen rights, security, governance, women’s empowerment, and gender-related issues in Nigeria. I am Ogechukwu Holly Mohanye, your host. My Co-host, Hadiza Abubakar, joins me. We are excited to introduce our new season, themed "Building Bridges, Empowering Voices."

Over the past decade, PWAN has worked tirelessly to promote citizen rights, security, and governance through our Rule of Law and Citizens Security Program Areas. We have achieved this through various initiatives, including capacity building for security agencies, public sensitization on Nigerian policies like ACJL, GBV-related issues, and human rights. We also focus on promoting access to justice through offering pro-bono services, court observations, and creating community-based structures that help address gender-based violence and other human rights issues in Nigeria.

This season, we'll look closer at PWAN's decade-long journey of promoting citizen rights, security, and governance through our Rule of Law and Citizens Security Program Areas. Through eight insightful episodes, we'll explore critical topics that showcase our mission and impact as a non-governmental organization dedicated to enhancing citizens' participation and improving security governance in Nigeria and West Africa, with the ultimate goal of inspiring and empowering you to join us in building a more just and equitable society.

SE01EP 12 - Girl Child, The hope for the 21st Century

As we celebrate #TheInternationalDayoftheGirlchild today, it is important to remember that it is our responsibility to make our society safe for our girls and young women by addressing the challenges they face daily. These challenges are numerous and range from; poor medical care, limited access to quality education, SGBV, child marriage, etc. Girls deserve the right to a secure future. By empowering the Girl child, there is a multiplier effect in almost every sphere of life.

Towards a shift in these narratives, PWAN supports young women through empowerment in the areas of education (bridging the illiteracy gap), politics (bridging the huge gender gap in decision-making) and entrepreneurship (fighting gender inequality through increasing women’s ability to work and earn which is a major cause of hunger and poverty).
