S6 E8: We All Go Around in Circles: The Story of Whirling Diease
Hello and welcome to Cause of Death – 100 Seconds to Midnight. I’m your host, Jackie Moranty. I changed my mind mid-script. I decided that I needed to finish this season with a 100 Seconds to Midnight Episode on extinction. I thought that would be more appropriate, so this week, I’m going to talk about the last disease in this season. We’re going to look at Whirling Disease in Fish. Let’s begin with etiology and pathology. This will be a new pathogen for us. Myxobolus cerebralis is a myxozoan parasite. Whirling disease is caused by the actinosporean spores of the parasite Myxobolus cerebralis. This parasite has a complex two-host lifecycle. The parasite alternates between the sludge worm, Tubifex tubifex and the salmonid host. I’ve hit 15,000 downloads! That’s a big deal. I never thought this podcast would attract as many listeners as it does and I want to thank everyone for coming back and passing the word.
