We believe that food isn’t just the fuel that we put into our bodies, it’s more than that, it brings families and friends together, it creates special moments and life time memories. It affects how we perform, how we think, how we sleep and how we feel in ourselves inside and out.

Therefore Catch Ups In My Kitchen aims to dig into personal stories and careers to discuss how food has had an impact on one's life. We aim for you to finish an episode having learnt some new healthy habits which you can implement into your everyday in order to be that 1% better than the day before!

E.147 Born Deaf and Wanting To Fit In with Georgia Meacham

In my kitchen this week I am joined by Georgia Meacham who was born deaf and wears two hearing aids. Ten years ago this wouldn't have been the first sentence used to describe Georgia, instead it would have been the fact that she is also a model and an actor, whilst also advocating for the Vegan diet and lifestyle. However, Georgia used to hide the fact that she was deaf due to the fact that she thought she would fit in, have a better chance of being chosen for modelling and acting jobs and have a better chance in relationships if she hid her hearings aids. This resulted in constant stress and anxiety and put her at a disadvantage where she wasn't getting the help she needed.

Everything changed when she decided to embrace her deafness, own her story, and advocate for others in similar situations. In this episode, we dive into the powerful shift from resisting a label to reclaiming it as a strength. Georgia opens up about how, for most of her life, she didn’t want to be defined by her deafness—she just wanted to be “normal.” But now, she sees it as a source of empowerment, shaping her journey in ways she never imagined.

This is such an inspiring episode that I think your going to love!

The topics we discuss are:

  • You were born deaf - what did that mean for you growing up?
  • Some of the challenges at school and making friends
  • Speech - how has this been affected - what did you do growing up to help this
  • Opening up about your disability - what did that look like before you opened up and what does it look like now?
  • The concept of being defined by a situation and letting a situation define you
  • The daily struggles of being deaf and what that looks like
  • Speaking in parliament
  • Navigating loud social situations
  • Discrimination - have you ever felt discriminated against?
  • Relationships
  • Your vegan - have you always been vegan?
  • What does wellness mean to you?
