Craig Lucie From News Anchor to Chief Story Teller - Part Two on Capital Club Radio

Join Michael Flock of FLOCK Specialty Finance and host of Capital Club Radio for Part two of his interview with Craig Lucie, founder and Chief Story Teller of Lucie Content and a star in the world of broadcast media. Craig started this company to shine a light on the positive things happening in our world and to share compelling stories that resonate with your audience.

He has two decades of news experience with multiple EMMY nominations and has won an EMMY for Best News Anchor. He has also received several AP Awards for his reporting and contributed reports to newscasts that have won the prestigious Edward R. Murrow awards. The Georgia Association of Broadcasters also recognized him as the best on-air personality in the state, and the Atlanta Business Chronicle named him as one of the 40 Under 40 recipients. Craig has appeared on ABC’s World News Tonight, CNN, MSNBC, FOX News and HLN. He was recently one of a few journalists invited to have dinner with President Donald Trump in the State Dining Room of The White House while covering a State of the Union Address.

Craig graduated from Southern Methodist University. He and his wife reside in Atlanta and they have two children.

Here is a glimpse of what Craig shared in the interview:

“Throughout this experience, I’ve almost come to the realization that there are two types of people in business. There are people who want to go out there and start a business and run a business; then there are people who just need to be put on the path to help that particular business succeed who have wonderful, fresh ideas.”

“Fortunately, things are going well. The sky’s the limit, is what I say, the sky is the limit.”

“When I was run over by a boat when I was in 5th grade, it was a big learning experience. I learned if you fight hard enough and you work hard enough, you will achieve what you want to achieve. When I had to fight to learn to walk again, I came back stronger as an athlete and that has helped in business as well.”

“You change the perception. It’s all about companies and non-profits controlling their message, putting out their own content because in many cases a lot of these bigger companies have a massive social media following across Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter. You might have 100,000 followers on Facebook. Why aren’t you giving them great content? They’re engaged in your brand.”

“Same thing, we’re pushing out these tweets, Instagram posts, Facebook posts to drive traffic to our content, which is living on our client’s website. So, we’re driving traffic to their sites.”

Scott Lowery, Back to Square One on Capital Club Radio
Scott Lowery, Back to Square One on Capital Club Radio

Join Michael Flock of FLOCK Specialty Finance as he interviews Scott Lowery, a well-known leader and successful entrepreneur in the debt buying industry.

Scott, throughout his tenure, was the Founder, CEO, President and Chairman of SquareTwo Financial Corporation, originally known as Collect America, LTD, headquartered in Denver, CO which became one of the top debt buyers in the United States and Canada. Under Scott’s guidance as CEO, the company grew to over 25 franchised law firms across the US, over 100 local counsel legal firms in the network and revenue consistently exceeding $300M annually, with its top annual revenue number just under 600 million. Prior to the financial crisis, Collect America was in talks for an IPO with a valuation approaching $1.4B. After a new CEO took charge, the financial performance declined severely and SquareTwo filed bankruptcy in 2017 and was ultimately sold to Resurgent Capital Services, LP, a subsidiary of Sherman Financial Group.

In 2018, Scott and his team acquired Galaxy Capital Acquisition, LLC which is a debt buyer and master servicer located in Atlanta, GA. Additionally, Scott is an attorney at Rausch, Sturm, Israel, Enerson and Horniek, LLC, based in Wisconsin. Scott discusses how he goes back to “square one” with his new platform Galaxy.

Scott currently serves on the Board of Trustees for Valor Christian High School, the Daniels School of Business Executive Advisory Board, the Colorado UpLift Board of Directors and Executive Board and the ACE Scholarships Board of Trustees. He also served on the Denver Hospice Board of Directors and the Investment Committee.

Scott earned a BS degree in Business Administration and a JD degree from the University of Denver. In 2004, he was the recipient of the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award. Scott and his wife reside in Denver and are the proud parents of three daughters.

Here is a glimpse of what Scott shared in the interview:

“…. success is not linear, It’s not a direct trade-off. So, you can do 90% of the work and still have zero or five or 10% of the success. Then suddenly it trips.”

“… so this “square one”, a re-do or encore is just a way to gather again great people and work with some fun people. And I love the business … There are so many levers to pull.”

About building culture: “I think it’s simple and it’s hard. The things you learned in elementary school, how to play well with others in the sand box. You’ve got to genuinely like people. You’ve got to genuinely respect people. You’ve got to have people believe in your vision and believe in you, and then they’ll push you.”

He brings out personal and professional experiences to illustrate how he shares his analytical knowledge with FLOCK clients to help them grow their businesses successfully.

Prior to joining FLOCK, Damon was Senior VP of Analytics at Eltman, Eltman & Cooper Capital Management where he oversaw the analysis and reporting of the financial performance of purchased portfolios. Here is a glimpse of what Damon shared in the interview.

“…it’s those sorts of people who take you under their wing, and mentor you and help you to see that learning self-discipline, self-control, thinking through things before you react emotionally to something, and always looking at the overall mission is something that you’re looking for.”

“The key thing, I think, is that as you go through those steps, that you respect the process, and whatever the answer is, is whatever the answer is.”

“So, you need to stick to your guns and have the courage of your convictions to hold true.”

“which is the nature of the Eagle Scout project. To learn to be trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent…”

Institutional Executive to Growth Entrepreneur John Coffin Interview on Capital Club Radio

Here is a glimpse of what John shared in the interview:

“I actually got into banking totally by mistake or kismet…through that process, that six month training class, decided I loved business and I loved banking.”

“… learned a lot about life in the Boy Scouts. About challenges and overcoming obstacles and pushing yourself further than maybe you’d think you were capable of.”

“… that’s something that our generation can learn from the millennials, their willingness to try different things and not be so locked into one career.”

Please join Michael Flock of FLOCK Specialty Finance as he interviews “growth” entrepreneur, John Coffin. John is the Co-Founder of Practical Growth Advisors (PGA) which is a consulting and advisory firm focused on serving privately held companies and helping them grow faster with confidence. John discusses his transformation from successful institutional executive to small business advisor and creative entrepreneur. He shares his great range of valuable experiences, both personal and professional, and how he’s leveraging these to help guide middle market companies towards achieving their growth goals today.

Prior to founding PGA, John was the Co-Founder and Executive Vice President of Atlantic Capital Bank. He oversaw the Bank’s Regional Corporate Banking, Financial Institutions and Capital Markets divisions. Atlantic Capital is the largest startup bank in US history with an initial capital raise of $125MM. After opening in May of 2007, Atlantic Capital quickly grew to become a $2.9 billion bank, primarily by executing the core strategy of serving the finance and banking needs of growing, privately-held companies. John earned a BA degree in English from Dartmouth College and received a MBA from Columbia University Graduate School of Business. John was an Eagle Scout and is currently a Merit Badge Counselor for the Boy Scouts of America. He is active in various civic activities and resides with his wife and three children in Atlanta, GA.

Andrew Dietz A Subversive in Brooks Brothers Clothing Interview on Capital Club Radio

Michael Flock spends time speaking with businessman, consultant, author and community leader, Andrew Dietz, about the power of relationships, branding and how to create a strong internal and external culture.

Andrew Dietz, Founder of Creative Growth and Co-Founder of Creative Influence, a sales-enabled public relations content firm for business-to-business organizations.  His clients have included firms such as Deloitte, Grant Thornton, Gensler, Perkins + Will, Wells Fargo Insurance, Chubb, Avanade (Accenture), Edelman Public Relations, Microsoft Professional Services, Cushman & Wakefield, Jones Lang LaSalle and many more.

Andrew is an industry-recognized expert on B2B Services strategy, innovation, entrepreneurship, marketing and revenue growth. He is a frequent contributing writer and speaker on marketing and management issues for national business publications and associations. In 2014, McGraw-Hill published Andrew’s book, The Opening Playbook: A Professional’s Guide to Building Relationships That Grow Revenue.

Prior to launching Creative Growth in 2003, Andrew was a consultant with Egon Zehnder International, one of the world’s leading human capital advisory and executive search firms. He co-founded netWorth Partners, a Private Equity investment firm affiliated with Mellon Bank, and he served as CEO of SideTalk and successfully executed its sale to a publicly traded entity.  Additionally, Andrew was a founding member of BellSouth’s Internet service provider, BellSouth.net, where he served as VP, Product Marketing and led the marketing launch of BellSouth’s broadband service.

Andrew lives in Atlanta, GA where his community leadership has focused on building the city’s creative community.  He has served on the Board of Directors for the Anti-Defamation League, Atlanta College of Art, IMAGE Film and Video (Atlanta Film Festival), High Museum’s Contemporary Art Society, Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia and of VOX Teen Communications.  He also wrote the nationally acclaimed book, The Last Folk Hero – A True Story of Race and Art, Power and Profit which championed raw creative talent in the world of outsider art. (Ellis Lane Press, 2006)

Here is a glimpse of what Andrew shared in the interview:

“I was different. I’m a subversive in Brooks Brothers clothing, so I didn’t think that I would be accepted at BellSouth. But that was a really great environment for me. I say, especially early in your career, you want three things, network, name and knowledge.”

“…as I look at you and your business, you’ve built tremendous relationships as your team with people in the market. So, it does exist, but there is a reputation you’re dealing with. And that reputation certainly is translated to consumer relationships.”

“…relationships are built, we could say one conversation at a time. Great conversations start with curiosity, genuine curiosity.”

“And Steve Ross said 10% thinking, 90% doing. Strategy before tactics doesn’t mean you over think, but you have got to put a little time in, aiming before firing.”

Tom Simonson Reviving Bill Bartmann's Dream and Transforming CFS into Merit Financial on Capital Club Radio
On this episode of Capital Club Radio... Michael Flock interviews Tom Simonson at the RMA conference in Las Vegas about  his monumental undertaking - the re-engineering of Bill Bartmann's Commercial Financial Services (CFS) and reviving Bill's dream and Transforming CFS into Merit Financial.

Tom is the President and CEO of the Merit Family of Companies, formed in 2017 and comprised of Merit Financial Solutions, Financial Samaritan and Financial Samaritan Lending. Additionally, Tom is President and CEO of CFS2, Inc., the debt buying, servicing and collection R&D company that developed the methods and software now being used by Merit Financial Solutions.

Prior to becoming President and CEO of CFS2 in December 2016, Tom had served as COO of CFS2, a position he has held since August, 2014. Prior to this, Tom was Worldwide General Manager of the Technology, Consulting and Systems Integration Division at Unisys Corporation. He was responsible for their global go-to-market plan, sales, field operations and customer satisfaction. Tom, a graduate of Drexel University, began his career with over 20 years of service at IBM where he held a variety of senior executive positions. He lived for two years in Paris, France while working as an executive at IBM's European headquarters.

Here is a glimpse of what Tom shared in the interview.
"I think there was always two sides to the Bill Bartmann story and the controversy around it. On the one hand, you had what you described, which was the scandal and the ultimate demise of CFS. But on the other hand, you had a man who was quite the visionary and could see things that others in the industry or in other industries did not see..."
"I learned that you need a precise strategy, that you need maniacal focus, and you need a certain level of cadence and discipline..."
"when you're building the business and you're making the level of transformation that we are, you do rely on investors up front and you have to learn to raise money as part of your everyday operating..."
