Can I Pod With Madness - Kerrang in the 1980s
Everyone Likes Conkers - Q July 1990
How much for Prince’s shoes? It’s the Spooky/Christmas season so we’re discussing Trick or Treat related anxiety, dressing as Lindsey Buckingham for Halloween, and which of the CIPWM corporation is of no use when it comes to wrapping presents.  We go through a couple of our Christmas movie favourites  - no change there, then - and review some of our recent TV watches (Andor! Mayfair Witches! The Ed Gein Show!). By the way, did you ever notice rock bands in the 90s were really fucking into serial killers, for some reason? Meanwhile, in 1990, it’s July and, much like Muriel Gray’s best friends, we’re looking at Q Magazine issue 46. This particular publication, you’ll recall, is thick as a dick, so we’re only going to scratch the surface, but along the way we’ll look at some Rock Auctions (Rawktions) and how Jimi Hendrix's guitar is somehow both under and overpriced, a report on that John Lennon Tribute Concert you forgot all about, and some news reports about The Dogs D’Amour (Kerrang adjacent!) and Janet Jackson (Cat related content!). We hear from a listener, who has a recommendation that we thoroughly enjoy.  Recorded 4th Oct 2025

Patreon Bonus Pod Preview: Brilliant But Also Terrible: KISS SPECIAL
Here's a preview of our first Patreon exclusive Pod.  An attempt to cover Metal Hammer's KISS Fan Mag stays mostly off track as we lurch into an AMAZING Bret Michaels Based Quiz, literally sing the praises of Poison, take an uncomfortably deep dive into the work of Michael Bolton, and offer our hot new recommendation - or, if you will, Rockommendation for 2025: Vixen. Also, for some reason, a review of Andor. Full Episode includes: Andor Review What’s Bret MicHEOWLING? Poison Tribute. Michael Bolton: Deep Dive Rock of Love Retrospective Rockommendation: Vixen KISS FAN MAG KISS KWISZ The Golden Girls: Slight Return KISS STATZ Bolton: The Deepest Dive Sounds pretty good right? Not just a bog standard episode behind a paywall! To listen to the whole unexpurgated mess, just sign up to our Patreon here: https://www.patreon.com/c/PodWithMadness In addition to the bonus pods, you also get access to the PWM digital archive where you can read along with us, early episode access and we'll even send you our old, used Kerrangs! A Very Sexual Material - Kerrang 258, Sept 30 1989 pt2 PWM54
We’re back to finish off Kerrang 258, even though we did all the good bits last time. The old reliable maniacs in the letters page and personal ads come through for us, once again so don’t worry about that! There’s MORE Jim Steinman discourse, because that dude can’t be limited to one podcast. We do a DEEP KUTZ that we’ve already done, review some horror movies, and bring back TV KRYMEZ!   Video Fears! Endless Friends chat! The best superhero music revealed! And the 347th mention of The Decline of Western Civilization Part 2: The Metal Years on this podcast. We *really* need to watch that movie.   This episode is not sponsored by Candy Kittens but it fucking might as well be - however, please note this is now an EG Daily fan podcast.   Recorded 14 Sept 2025

A Human Flesh Woman - Kerrang 258, Sept 30 1989 - PWM53
It's September so we're talking Christmas TV ads OBVIOUSLY. Meanwhile, in 1989 it's also September and Kerrang have an interview with Jim Steinman. Have a guess whether you think he's a fan of Dire Straits or the Police Academy franchise. There's a certain amount of shade thrown at Mitch Pileggi but that's down to our antipathy for Skinner from the X-Files,  and not his appearance in the extremely metal horror movie Shocker. Bruce Dickinson’s solo career and stage trousers are discussed. We reminisce about the worst Christmas Eve ever and look back at the best live performers from the early 2000s Pop Idol era. And we ascertain the exact moment in history when Alice Cooper was at his sexiest. Also we launch our Patreon. Come on, it had to happen.  Shoutout to @Kerrang_Classic_Magazine for posting stuff from the issue. This week’s secret theme: Ken Russell.   Recorded 7th September 2025

Can I Pod With Madness - Kerrang in the 1980s
Jive Bunny is like Prog - Metal Hammer July 18th 1988 - PWM52
We're back with our heads in Metal Hammer this week- it's 1988 - Ozzy is on tour, King Diamond is robbing graves and Van Halen is utterly indecipherable.  When we're not reading about a respectable heavy metal mum (37 - so she'd be 74 now, hello if you're listening ma'am), we spiral into the rabbit hole of all rabbit holes, Rotherham's very own Jive Bunny. If that wasn't enough of an irrelevant tangent for you we also dig into a nefarious conspiracy around Fruit of the Loom.  Also ANOTHER Kompetition update, Nizlopi memories and stuff about Christmas. Please note this episode features the first mention of Ed Sheeran on this podcast. And very probably the last. Plus a DEEP KUTZ DUET.   Recorded 15th August 2025

Venom Ain’t Got No Knobs - Kerrang 50 Sept 1983 - PWM51
Caught Up In The Rapture of Me! We’re jumping forward two years to find Kerrang well and truly established, hitting its 50th issue and smushing a cake onto Ian Gillan’s head. The celebrated Child In Time screamer currently finds himself NOT in the ranks of the mighty Purps, but somehow inexplicably in the doom laden court of another seminal 70s metal combo. Who could that be? Stonehenge based shenanigans aside, we have a feature on Venom, who are NOT HAPPY. Also disgruntled are Fastway, and most of the Korrespondents on the letters page. Crikey! Nazareth's Dan McCafferty appears in a photo I will never post on Instagram, and I regret to note that we're definitely losing the Quo fans with this episode. Luckily Ozzy shows up on the back cover and all is well again. We've got some DEEP KUTZ, an argument about DEEP KUTZ, and a Kompetition Update!    Recorded 6th August 2025

Did You Read The Music Papers? Kerrang issue 1, June 1981 - PWM50
Join us as we look back on fifty glorious years of podcasting, in our ass-blasting, spectacular Anniversary Blowout!! We're teleporting all the way back to June ‘81 to check out a little magazine called Kerrang, The Sounds Heavy Metal Special (and The Empire Strikes Back Monthly issue 146). We look at some of the lesser known NWOBHMers (hello Handsome Beasts!), and check out the OFFICIAL 100 Greatest Heavy Metal songs. What’s at number 1? The answer may shock you. Or, y’know it may not.   Saxon get a big article that's mostly about tea. And there’s a lot of pics IN COLOUR! Works brilliantly on a podcast, that does.   We unveil a new feature, SUPERFICIAL SKRATCHEZ, PWM Ghostwatch continues, we chronicle our day trip to Whitby, bid a fond farewell to Ozzy and even manage to inadvertently shoutout to some of our listeners. And there's some fun end of term games too!   Etc!   Recorded 30th July, 2025

Slayerfest 98 - Kerrang 706, July 1998 - PWM49
Ch-ch-ch, Ha-ha-ha. Here's the second part of our DEEP dive into the rock scene of the late 90s. Kerrang is counting down the 100 Coolest Rock Stars and we attempt to guess who's made the list. Is Saffron from Republica here? You'll have to listen to find out.   Also, amid tales of hanging around in graveyards (goth af), we're reminiscing about stoner rock pub gigs, examining ghost physics, and continuing to bang on about Buffy. What’s workplace team building like in Sunnydale? Who's the 90s equivalent of Lisa Dominique? Who remembers Live Aid? What’s a Alice Cooper slasher crossover? Can we name the members of Reef?    Plus: Korntroversy!    Recorded July 13, 2025 This week's ad is for @musicnoteswithjess

It's The Nineties - Kerrang 706 July 1998 - PWM48
Gettin' it straight in '98 y'all! We're just back from a Star Wars "convention", and tearing ourselves away from playing (Kessel) Sabacc long enough to record a podcast, we're tackling a Kerrang from the modern era (27 years ago). The deeply ungoogleable pop punk band A are recalled, as is the unloved meteor based sci fi blockbuster Armageddon. We examine how Disney *really* banked on the popularity of that movie well past its use by date, and also the curious marketing decision of forcing people who want to go to Honey I Shrunk The Audience to watch a seemingly endless advert for Kodak. The Prodigy and The Beastie Boys are all over this issue, and Dream Theater predictably get a right kicking in the live reviews. The Presidents of the USA are no more (for the moment, at least). One of us saw them live. The other was clearly too busy watching Julia Valet on Superock. David Lee Roth might be ignoring the 90s but we sure as hell aren't!   This week's ad is for @PolyphonicPress Recorded 31st May 2025

Can I Pod With Madness - Kerrang in the 1980s
Snake is a metaphor for life Q32 May 1989 PWM47
I want to feel disgusted! Once again we’re reliving our glory years of watching Buffy The Vampire Slayer and going to Cybergoth Nights. The Cure’s Robert Smith is being lowered into a furry, sticky orifice but not mentioning any potential Freudian implications. He's right about Morrissey, mind. We dig into a lengthy Peter Gabriel article, which is mostly about WOMAD and Real World Studios, so of course we talk a lot about Alan Partridge, the Genesis Reunion concert and whether Gabes consults his mum and dad when making his videos. Katy Perry’s Twitch Channel! Gravity boots! Michael Keaton love! Also exercise tips! Please note this is now a lifestyle podcast.   Recorded 17th May 2025   This weeks’s advert is for @WorstPodOnMars

Grannycore - Q32 May 1989 (PWM46)
Extra special 46th episode spectacular! Due to a tech fail cock up of massive proportions, this week we're looking at Q - The *Modern* Guide to Music and More - from May ‘89. Sting is on the cover, because of course he fucking is. We examine the intellectual rock hunk's activism, how difficult it is being really really good looking, and his half hearted feud with Rod Stewart. We're also talking Fun House, like, a proper Fun House Deep Dive. I swear there's been more mentions of Pat Sharp on this podcast than The Big Four. We dredge up our Blackadder and Red Dwarf memories. Musical genres are nailed down to locations in the UK. Also stuff about KISS. As usual.  Rainforests! Environmental info! Dietary advice! Fucking hell, we've gone woke! Also essential interior decoration tips. Don't say we never do nothing for ya.   This week's ad is for The @AlbumNerds podcast.  Recorded 10th May 2025

A Nice Thing For Sharks - RAW4 Oct 12-25 1988 (PWM45)
Veering wildly away from our edict of “keep it light” we're discussing the best way to dispose of a corpse. I guess that makes us slightly more metal.  Otherwise we're finishing off our extremely deep dive into RAW issue 4. Motörhead's Phithy Animal Taylor gets a drum centric feature and the finer points of drum solos and electronic percussion are discussed. Zodiac Mindwarp is back, wishing he was royalty and Scarborough's finest, The Little Angels are playing a gig at a school. In Scarborough.  Along the way we talk hair dye, Buffy and our own personal Banter Box.  Special shout out to RJ and the Painful Memories- by the time you listen to this it's probably too late to vote for them in Kerrang Radio's The Deal competition, but give them a listen anyway because they rock.    This week’s ad is for @PickADisc Podcast  Recorded 26 April 2025

Can I Pod With Madness - Kerrang in the 1980s
Quite Bulbous- RAW4 Oct 12-25 1988 (PWM44)
We're back with another delve into RAW. The hefty Bon Jovi pullout is examined, but not as much as the video to Bad Medicine. One of KISS’ least loved hits is reappraised, and we draw a link between Ozzy Osbourne and Tim Allen.  A misconception about Alice Cooper's biggest hit just leads us into further confusion. Meanwhile there's an article about Mr Big that doesn't tell us that much but we can all agree the harmonies are good. We finally learn Ozzy’s favourite film (some recency bias), but before we can read the rest of the mag, we go off on a few tangents about Sandworms, Star Wars and the early work of M Night Shyamalan. Yes, this is now a whopping three parter! Also we talk about cats. Like, a lot. Finally we've got our first GIVEAWAY which is *very* exciting so make sure you listen till the end (or skip through the ep to get to that bit) Recorded 29th March 2025 This week's ad is for Getting Down and Wordy @gettingdownandwordy

Can I Pod With Madness - Kerrang in the 1980s
A Very Feminine Heterosexual- RAW4 Oct 12-25 1988 (PWM43)
As promised, here's a look at the Johnny come lately rock mag of the 80s and early 90s, RAW - Rock Action Worldwide (it says here). American comedian Sam Kinison has a single out and is roping in his rockin’ pals to help out. But who’s the most dateable metal hunk in the video? And is Kinison a threat to The Goonies? There's some news about a new band who are destined for greatness, and an unfortunate incident with seafood. Possibly. Also Manowar say goodbye to Ross “The Boss” Friedman and hello to Dave “The Death Dealer” Shankle. This is why I was never a metal god, I never had a nickname. What have Anvil got in common with The Spice Girls? The answer may shock you.  Also! A DEEP KUTZ that is both smooth and angry! Superman history! Important information about Piranhas! Dry vs wet!    Recorded 16th March 2025

Anything to do with aliens is fine with Dirty - Kerrang 482, February 19 1994 (PWM42)
We're back with another deep dive into K482. We have a look at that televisual classic The Word (which has locked 50 Sepultura fans in a metal cage for no discernable reason).  There's singlez (from Soundgarden, Primal Scream, Smashing Pumpkins and Corduroy), and posters (celebrating the Big Hitters of grunge. And Tad). The Wildhearts’ health and safety precautions are questioned and we look at a very dubious piece of cover art by a band called... sigh... Genital Deformities.  The main feature is a look at the new “improved” 90s version of Mötley Crüe, which finds our heroes without Vince Neil, but apparently unable to talk about anything else.  Similarly free of their best known front man, Marillion are 6 years Fishless, but still doing concept albums. And a film -gulp! Also: Korrespondents, Klassifieds, and a teaser for the next episode. You've never had it so good!   Recorded 8th March 2025   This week’s ad is for the @astrovert_media Podcast

Vince Grungepussy- Kerrang 482, February 19 1994 (PWM41)
Swingin’ on the flippity flop! It's the mid 90s, and we're donning our best flannel, kickin’ it with Ren and Stimpy and checking out Kerrang! To the extreme! Join us as we try to remember the name of our current favourite song! Confusing Steven Tyler for Jarvis Cocker! The Encarta / Cinemania / Music Central triptych of mid-90s CD-ROM excellence! Rediscovering 90s Britpop second divisioners Cast and accusing them of Guns n’ Roses plagiarism! Punky Fish remembered! Other stuff! We investigate what makes a good band name, and how there aren’t any. Aerosmith! The Cult! Gwar! Nine Inch Nails! Redd Kross! And the return of Mother Tongue! All this and a non anecdote about almost going to the inaugural Phoenix Festival. Make sure you listen to find out how that one turned out!   This week's ad is for @Polyphonic_Press Recorded on Feb 6th, 2025

Saviours Day Is I-cumen In - Kerrang 168, December 1987 (PWM40)
What's a jalopy? What's that awful wailing? Ozzy Osbourne doing Winter Wonderland, that's what, so it must be our fun, festive Christmas episode.  Cliff's least loved Christmas hit is examined and we struggle to follow the plot of a video for a smooth 80s jam. Also, remember Lemmings? Man that was a good game.  In the world of Kerrang, we look at the Christmas 1987 edition, which features a ton of stuff we've already talked about on previous episodes. And there's an end of term game which very nearly goes all right.  The long awaited return of fan favourite features TV KRYMEZ and Have You Seen The Chart leads us to explore the parallel universes of Shaky and Dennis Waterman. Plus all the usual tangents and bullshit. You know the drill by now!   This week's ad is for @MusicNotesWithJess   Recorded Friday 13th December 2024

Leafbeard - Kerrang 246, July 1989 (PWM39)
Faith No More's Big Jim Martin appears as the Kerrang cover star this week, so we're back in AD 1989. There's a NWOBHM special, because of course there is, and we examine a few forgotten heroes of that bygone age. Or to be more specific, we look at a couple of goofy old promo photos. We check in with our old pals Ice Age who are ROCKING Wisbech Market Square, and The Who's Pete Townshend who's about to unleash his version of The Iron Man. Slash is dictating a letter to the press, we look at some SINGLEZ (Beastie Boys! Nuclear Assault! Soundgarden!), and once again consider King Diamond's face!   Sexy cartoons! American state mispronunciation. Even more Bea Arthur! Also the Milli Vanilli/Faith No More collision you never knew happened!   Our ad this week is for The @PickaDisc Podcast Recorded 16th November 2024.

It's a Blow Up The Outside World After All (PWM38)
We're just gonna carry on as if there's not been a massive gap in our scheduling, and everything's completely normal, right? Denim and Leather are BACK! Our unexpected hiatus means we have a LOT to catch up on, which means no Kerrang this week- if you regularly tune in for info on all your Classic 80s metal faves you might want to skip this one (but also, what the fuck, are you OK?). In the meantime it's our usual bullshit: Chris De Burgh is cyberstalked, we meet Instagram royalty and complain about how hot Florida is. More arguments about Ghost! Tetchy cinema interactions. Cancellations aplenty. Can we possibly afford a pair of hazmat suits? Also this is now a Golden Girls fan Pod. HI BILLY! What's the one movie that gets mentioned on this podcast more than any other? Long time listeners will hardly be surprised to hear that we've recorded a Lost Boys special. Join us as we luxuriate in the sexy vampire goodness, 80s style!  What's Kiefer Sutherland like in real life? Has Billy Wirth cast a spell over all women of a certain age? Who is the drummer in this band? Do DVDs still exist? Are there any other movies with vampires in? We'll attempt to answer all these questions, and along the way relate various stories of awkward celebrity interactions. And the usual digressions, obv.   The video we edited for Alan Frog, Jamison Newlander @jamisonnewlander is here  https://youtu.be/toU6YKRH5xQ?si=cCXAD6jy4STVU9bt   Follow The Lost Frogs Comics @the_lost_frogs_comics (and for gods sake please try and identify the mystery comic book cover).   Follow For The Love of Horror @ftlohorror and if you can make it to the event you stand a good chance of meeting Tim Capello   Our ad this week is for The Worst Podcast on Mars @worstpodonmars   Recorded July 11th 2024
