The Do's and Don'ts of Designing and Build Your Own Custom Home

Vicky and Jun Bantug of Canton, GA sat down with Jack Baldwin or Reynard Custom Homes (http://reynarddesign.com) to discuss their recent custom home design/build project. Their home has been approved for a building permit and ground has been broken to begin construction. ___________________ Jack Baldwin: Welcome to By Design, the Reynard Custom Homes Podcast. Today, we're joined by Jun and Vicky, who are building their dream home in Canton, Georgia. Welcome, Jun and Vicky! Reynard Custom Homes Podcast: Unveiling the Journey of Jun & Vicky Vicky and Jun Bantug are Reynard Custom Home clients designing and building their dream home in Canton, GA Jun & Vicky: Thank you! Jack Baldwin: It's great to have you here. Let's dive right into it. What inspired you to embark on the journey of building your own dream home? Jun & Vicky: Currently, we live in a townhouse, and the motivation for us was the desire for more space. We didn't want to feel trapped anymore and envisioned a place with a yard. The decision to build stemmed from our wish to create a home tailored to our preferences and the excitement of working with an architect. Jack Baldwin: Interesting. What motivated you to start this project, considering the investment and the time it takes? Jun & Vicky: The motivation came from our current living situation and the anticipation of leaving our townhouse in a few years. We saw it as an opportunity to build a house that truly reflects our tastes and preferences. The investment aspect was also appealing, especially considering the potential return on investment from buying and selling land. Jack Baldwin: That's a unique perspective. Please share your background and what led you to this point. Jun & Vicky: It all began when we attended a land auction without a clear plan. We purchased a piece of land, and as we explored the surrounding lots, we met other builders who encouraged us to pursue our dream. This initial step set the stage for our journey, and here we are, three and a half years later, with the land graded and construction underway. The home was designed by Vicky and Jun in collaboration with Reynard's custom home design team. The home was designed by Vicky and Jun in collaboration with Reynard's custom home design team.

Design and Build Your Custom Home - Owning the Process

I to think we (Reynard Custom Homes) are pretty good at starting with the end in mind.
Taking on a custom home design/build project can be pretty complex, and there is no shortage of opinions, methods, approaches, and "hacks" to get your home built.
While there are many legitimate ways to skin this custom home cat, every single custom home built will need plans, specs, and a budget.
We've found the process that works for us is to:
Partner with a client - What are your goals?
Understand their vision - What does success look like? Define it.
Set parameters - What can we do/not do? What's our budget to work with?
Discover requirements - What is needed to make this happen?
Document - How will it get done? Specifications, building instructions, cost?
Deliver - Get the permit, develop the property, and build the house.
I've noticed our team works efficiently when we keep asking these questions and getting serious about finding answers. Sometimes, the answers are frustrating, but this staged approach allows us to bite off only what we can chew, so neither our clients nor our team are over-leveraged as we find answers.
November 1, 2023, I had the privilege of meeting with three visionary homeowners, each embarking on their own custom home journey.
Linda is in the process of discovering how to transform a historical 1920's residence into her dream home. This journey involves navigating through permitting intricacies, meticulous budgetary planning, and addressing the challenges posed by the existing structure. Linda's story showcases the delicate balance required when modernizing a historic home while preserving its timeless charm.
In Canton, GA, Vicky and her husband have completed the design phase and are entering the initial stages of building their dream home. They partnered with Reynard Custom Homes to bring their vision to life within their budget. Vicky's experience exemplifies the collaboration and seamless execution that defines our approach to turning dreams into reality.
Meanwhile, Susan, in North Georgia, is at the inception of her custom home design process with Reynard Custom Homes. Collaborating closely with renowned architect James Knight, she has developed a unique architectural concept. Susan is now delving into the final details of her construction set, navigating through the intricacies of permitting and construction budgeting. Her journey underscores the importance of meticulous planning and attention to detail from the project's outset.
As I conversed with Linda, Vicky, and Susan, their unique stories highlighted the diverse challenges at different stages of the custom home design process. From preserving historical charm to executing a well-defined vision and navigating the complexities of initial design phases, each homeowner's journey is a testament to the dedication and expertise we bring to the table at Reynard Custom Homes.
At Reynard Custom Homes, we understand that the path to a dream home is not a one-size-fits-all journey. Our commitment to guiding clients through every stage, from concept to completion, ensures that each project is a true reflection of our clients' dreams and aspirations.
In the world of custom home design, every story is unique, and we are honored to be a part of the narrative, turning dreams into architectural masterpieces. If you're considering a custom home project, let Reynard Custom Homes be your partner in crafting the home you've always envisioned.

Why You Should Design and Build Your Dream Home - Interview with Marci Robinson

Designing and Building Her Dream Home w/ Reynard Custom Homes

Embarking on designing and building your dream home is a thrilling and rewarding experience. Marci Robinson, a client of Reynard, as she shares her experiences, challenges, and joys throughout the architectural design process. Join us in exploring the critical aspects of trust, teamwork, and the importance of embracing the design process.

Trust the Design Process:

Marci emphasizes the importance of trusting the design process. Acknowledging the overwhelming nature of home-building decisions, she highlights the significance of relying on a diverse design team. In an interview with Jack Baldwin from Reynard, Marci shares her initial doubts and the realization that owning every detail individually might be too much. Trusting the entire team became crucial to making the process work seamlessly.

The Power of a Diverse Design Team:

Reynard boasts a talented and diverse team, including James Knight, Kalyn Kight, and Meg Riley. Marci expresses her confidence in the team's ability to bring her vision to life. The collaborative effort of the design team resonates with the principle of designing with, not just for, the client. The trust built within the team allows for a smoother and more enjoyable design journey.

Choosing the Right Design Team:

Marci shares her journey of finding Reynard Custom Homes through an online search. The team's consistent appearance in search results and an interactive selection process led Marci and her daughter to discover a genuine connection with Reynard. Quick and enthusiastic responses from Jack Baldwin solidified their decision, showcasing the team's dedication and eagerness to embark on this exciting venture.

Meeting the Design Team:

The By Design podcast, hosted by Jack Baldwin, introduces the Reynard Custom Homes team and provides clients like Marci with a platform to share their experiences. The podcast features open conversations with the design team, creating a sense of camaraderie and transparency. Marci recalls the pleasure of meeting the team, including James Knight, Kalyn Kight, and Meg Riley, making the entire process feel like a shared adventure.

Design Inspiration and Vision:

Marci's vision for her dream home is a unique blend of outdoor elements, incorporating a creek, treehouse, and a non-traditional outdoor area. Inspired by her travels, Marci aims to merge the beauty of mountains, rocks, water, and hiking into the design. Inspired by her son, the unexpected addition of a Hobbit house theme adds a touch of whimsy and personalization to the project.

Communication and Collaboration:

A critical element that Marci praises is the communication platform provided by Reynard. The accessibility and openness of the platform allow for effective collaboration with the entire family. Marci acknowledges the importance of including her young adult children in the process, creating a sense of shared ownership and making the journey a family affair.

Overcoming Challenges:

Reflecting on the challenges faced, Marci mentions the initial overwhelm from the many decisions involved in the home-building process. However, she credits the team's anticipation and guidance in addressing challenges related to the order of tasks, such as soil tests, landscape considerations, and builder selection. The support provided by Jack Baldwin in connecting Marci with a reliable builder who aligned with the architectural design process played a crucial role in overcoming challenges.

Lessons Learned and Valuable Advice:

As someone who has navigated the design process, Marci imparts valuable advice for those considering a similar journey. Trusting the design process, bringing in a builder early to gain cost insights, and maintaining flexibility with timelines are critical lessons learned. Marci encourages future homeowners to embrace the entire process, savoring each unique phase and being open to the unexpected.
