Binary System Podcast #479 – We watched Heretic (and Mayor of Kingstown)

In our continuing series “Elizabeth And Kathryn Watch Things That Are Less Than A Year Old”, this week we watched 2024’s Heretic (came out last November, just under a year, still counts!) It’s a brilliantly creepy, slow burn of a film, Hugh Grant somehow manages to be charming and terrifying at the same time, and the plot is…well we’re not going to spoil the plot because you really need to see this one.

What we are going to spoil is everything that happened in the Season 4 premiere of Mayor of Kingstown. And oh boy, this season is gonna be brutal. Kyle’s going to prison, Bunny’s best friend is looking down the barrel of a prison war, there’s a new gang leader executing rival gang members with a train, and Evelyn looks like she’s realized how much she actually cares about Mike right as Mike kicks her out of his life. And since this is the last season you just know that pretty much every character has a giant target on them.

Oh, and Mike still doesn’t know what happened to Iris. Wonder how well THAT’S going to go over.

Binary System Podcast #478 – WTNV #276 “The Big Game”, Wednesday, and random horror

It’s a short episode this week because we decided we weren’t going to spoil the ending of Night Vale’s latest episode: it’s such a quiet, subtle story, perfect for an autumn day, and you really should give it a listen.

We still manage to fit in some random ramblings of course, including Wednesday (surprisingly good), Angel Heart (“..that movie is like a soft warm blanket with nightmares in it..”), Sinners coming to IMAX (oh we are SO THERE), Mayor of Kingstown, the AWS outage, the lack of director’s commentaries, the Dragonfall Drawing Challenge, and Kathryn and Nathan’s new roommate.

Binary System Podcast #477 – We watched Sinners

Yep, you read that right. This week in complete defiance of our usual routine we made a plan – watch Sinners – and then we actually followed the plan and watched a movie less than six months after it came out!

And oh boy, what a movie! In just one film you’ve got vampire horror, a period drama, a celebration of music and culture in a way we’ve never seen a film do before, and, in case you missed that the first time, vampires! That are scary. We loved the effects, we adored the music, and we’re just gobsmacked by the acting talent, which includes Michael B. Jordan playing two roles and doing it so well that we kept forgetting that was what was happening. Listen in as we basically go squeeeeee for about twenty minutes, with a brief tangent to discuss Bram Stoker’s Dracula, a film that is way more enjoyable than you probably remember.

Binary System Podcast #476 – WTNV #275 “Date Night”, Lower Decks, and Wednesday

On this week’s Welcome to Night Vale episode Cecil is determined to tell you all about his date night at this awesome little bee-filled restaurant, but his producer wishes we could stick to the Top. Story. CECIL.

(Seeing as how the top story is Tabitha the Town Founder stomping around town EATING PEOPLE, his producer may have a point.)

After the recap we jump into Star Trek: Lower Decks season 5 episode 5, “Starbase 80?!”, which is full of corn dogs and zombies licking things, and man alive the animators on that show never miss a trick.

Then we wrap up with a quick word about Wednesday season 2, because that show has some impressive stunt casting that we can’t talk about because spoilers. But we do go off on a lot of tangents like ranch dressing, horror movie plans, and Chat GPT getting its poor fee fees hurt GET OVER YOURSELF, Open AI, at this point you’re just three ponzi schemes in a trench coat.

Binary System Podcast #475 – WTNV #274 “The HOA”

There’s a new Homeowners’ Association trying to muscle its way into Night Vale, and the residents of the Desert Grove neighborhood have a lot of questions. Will the new HOA have rules against owning more than 36 iguanas? Are abandoned cruise ships on the front lawn still allowed? And for crying out loud, what are the homeowners dues going to be? This being Night Vale – where all government conspiracies are true – the reality is going to be much worse than you think.

Having an entire episode devoted to HOA’s led to a discussion about what they actually do, and whether or not having something in place to prevent trashy lawns and hoarder houses is worth having someone checking to see if your lawn is more than eight inches high. Sharon. Not a long discussion tho’, because what we really want to talk about is that Elizabeth finally watched the second John Wick movie (excellent fight choreography, kiiinda missing the spark of the first in the series), and Kathryn finally watched The Substance (which is a great movie, don’t get me wrong, but it’s kiiinda hard to recommend it because dear Lord that last scene what did I just watch?)

Binary System Podcast #474 – Robert Redford and “The Sting.”

It’s a travel edition this week, featuring the return of special guest Hannah Wallace! Listen in as we discuss (accompanied by tree frogs and crickets) the life and work of Robert Redford, specifically The Sting since we all sat down to watch it in his memory.

Of course we also wander off into some tangents, like movies that are depressing but worth the effort, early 80s pop LPs, Samuel Jackson’s political connections, “Women in Fridge Syndrome,” and whether or not you want to play gin rummy with our Mom. (Not unless you’ve got deep pockets you don’t.)

Binary System Podcast #473 – WTNV #273 “Horror Recs”

As longtime Welcome To Night Vale fans and two people who love horror movies and are always accepting recommendations (with some terms and conditions*), the latest episode could not be more perfect. Not only does Cecil share some of his favorite horror movies, he also passes along suggestions from other familiar Night Vale citizens. Come for the recommendations, stay for the descriptions of what movies morph into when they cross over into Night Vale. A sequel to Brokeback Mountain where everyone’s a vampire? WE WOULD BOTH WATCH THAT.

*Movies must be clever, creepy, or out-and-out surreal. Supernatural elements preferred. Jump-scares welcomed. Blood and violence are acceptable, gross-out gore is not. NO TORTURE PORN.

Binary System Podcast #472 – Star Trek: Lower Decks and Wednesday season 2 premiere

“We’re not talking Uncanny Valley, we’re talking Uncanny Grand Canyon.”

In this week’s Star Trek: Lower Decks recap we discuss Dr. Migleemo’s attempt to cook for two food critics from Klowahka (…geddit? Cloaca? Bird butts? Cause they’re birds? It is a very silly episode) while Mariner tries to get her Klingon buddy Ma’ah’s captaincy back and Boilmer fanboys all over the place.

Then Elizabeth briefly talks about the first episode of Wednesday season two, which is also a little silly but with really good production values and some impressive stunt casting.

This segues into Kathryn trying to describe just how awful Asylum’s knockoff Little Mermaid really is, and that leads to a long rant about AI, because, seriously, you guys, it’s not saving you as much time as you think and the end result is so much worse. Also yes we’re old GET OFF OUR LAWN.

Well if you know us you know we love some Night Vale horoscopes, except for the fact that Capricorn is ALWAYS getting the shaft. Luckily this week Capricorn made it out fairly unscathed, other than that whole accidental bear mauling thing. That’s just LIFE, man.

Binary System Podcast #470 – Station Eleven Series Finale

We watched the series finale of Station Eleven this week, only three and a half years late, that’s a record for us! (Except for when we watched Mayor of Kingstown season three the same month it was released. Or Love Death and Robots the same week it came out. We’re bad at TV except when we’re not. Don’t try to logic the bit. Shoo.)

Massive great big spoiler warnings of course, because we can’t talk about the final episode without going over every bit that kicked us right in the heart and surprised the hell out of us. Seriously, we had our guesses where things were going to go and we were wrong every time and we loved every bit of it. (Except Alex. Could you just PICK A SIDE. ALEX.)

After that we touched briefly on the Hugo Award winners, most of which were also a surprise, including Star Trek: Lower Decks getting best Graphic Story AND best Dramatic Short Form. (Listen in for Elizabeth trying to correct Kathryn that of COURSE she got that wrong because they didn’t get both OH NO WAIT THEY DID.)

And then of course we’ve gotta tangent some tangents, and discuss the upcoming season of Mayor of Kingstown, and why it’s probably good it’s the last one, and how they darn well better give us some angst-ridden Mike because that’s what we LIKE.

Binary System Podcast #469 – WTNV #271 “The Festival”, and Station Eleven

Welcome To Night Vale is back from hiatus, and they’ve brought us the perfect summer episode! The description of a mysterious festival in the desert made us nostalgic for Dead & Company shows, and the description of just how horribly, HORRIBLY the festival goes wrong made us nostalgic for when Fyre Festival was an entertaining dumpster fire, instead of…whatever that Fyre Festival 2 attempt was. (Come on, McFarland, if you’re gonna fail then at least make it an interesting failure.)

After that we’ve got the penultimate episode of Station Eleven, where we finally find out what happened to Jeevan after he disappeared from Kirsten’s life. This show absolutely never goes where we expect it to, but what you’re guaranteed to have is amazing music, heartbreakingly real characters, and the two of us having an amazing amount of trouble remembering people’s names. Binary System Podcast #468 – San Diego Comic-Con, GalaxyCon, and Lower Decks

This week we’ve got recaps of ALL the Conventions. And by all we mean two. But they’re big ones!

The West Coast branch of the podcast was at San Diego Comic-Con, while the East Coast branch was at GalaxyCon Raleigh. We spent the weekend taking cosplay photos, checking out the latest merch on the sales floor, attending an amazing panel on working with cosplay foam, and seeing the original Tim Burton Batman with an orchestra playing the music live.

After the recap we went over the second episode of the final season of Star Trek: Lower Decks (it was hilarious), and took a quick look at the latest season of Rick & Morty (it was fine?)

Plus the usual tangents into clickbaity events, superhero fatigue, sub-par sound systems, and whether or not we need to watch KPop Demon Hunters.

Binary System Podcast #467 – Station Eleven and Star Trek: Lower Decks

The Station Eleven episode we recap this week is number 7, “Goodbye My Damaged Home”, and oh boy. If you’re watching this show then you know why this one just knocked our socks off. (And if you’re not, well, you really should, what are you waiting for?) We finally get the backstory for why Kirsten and Jeevan left Chicago, and why Frank wasn’t with them when they left, and it’s all kinds of beautiful and tragic, with stunningly good choices for the music, and brilliant cinematography, and young Kirsten’s cardboard costumes are perfect and that is not up for debate.

It’s an episode that chooses a slightly different format for what would usually be a typical flashback story. So it’s fitting that we follow it up with the Star Trek: Lower Decks season 5 premiere, which takes a go-to template for a Star Trek story – the crew members meet the alternate reality versions of themselves – and then does something juuust slightly different with it.

Binary System Podcast #466 – Station Eleven, Lower Decks, Superman, and “The Spectacular Failure of the Star Wars Hotel”

It’s a bonus-sized (and spoileriffic!) episode this week because we’ve got a lot to go over. Another episode of Station Eleven of course, with gorgeous cinematography, excellent music, and a lot of questions: are the child-bombing psychos from the Museum, the Prophet, or the Red Bandanas? (Or all three, we have no idea who’s side anybody is on.) Does the Conductor have cancer, because in TV land bald = cancer but we know in the real world bald = chemotherapy and there’s probably not a lot of chemo in the apocalypse. And finally, Alex, come on, we know you’re up to something, please don’t be evil?

Next up on the season 4 finale of Lower Decks, remember last week where we wondered if one storyline was a very deep pull from Star Trek the Next Generation? Turns out yes it was a very deep pull from Star Trek the Next Generation. One that, at the time, made us feel really bad so it’s no surprise we squashed the memory. But this episode makes up for a lot of that.

And after that, surprise of all surprises, Elizabeth went to see the new Superman movie while it was still in the theater. Short version: she really liked it, though it wasn’t quite as good as that trailer we loved. But that’s an awfully high bar to hit. However Nathan Fillion is all kinds of awesome, the end.

And finally, Kathryn watched the first hour of the Hugo-nominated “The Spectacular Failure of the Star Wars Hotel.” Turns out there are many things to love about Disney’s short-lived luxury LARPing experience, but they’ve got an emergency plan that we DO NOT LIKE, and could possibly be illegal, but Disney gonna Disney.

Binary System Podcast #465 – Station Eleven, Star Trek: Lower Decks, and Picard

First up this week we start with a spoileriffic recap of the Station Eleven bottle episode “The Severn City Airport,” where we find out how the Prophet became so intensely creepy, tho we’re still not sure how he ended up with The Book.

Then we jump to an equally spoileriffic recap of the second-to-last episode of Star Trek: Lower Decks season 4, where we get a little more info about the mystery ship that’s abducting people, and the reason why Mariner’s had a frikking death wish for the last few episodes. (We think there may be a pretty deep pull there, but of course we haven’t looked it up. Feel free to yell at us in the comments!)

Finally, Elizabeth has a brief (and slightly spoileriffic, natch) look at the final episode of Picard. TL:DR, it’s fine? Very nostalgic and fun, but the fact that it took her literally months to watch the whole season is not a good sign.

Binary System Podcast #464 – Station Eleven and Star Trek: Lower Decks

Our journey through a post-pandemic world continues this week as we discuss the fourth episode of Station Eleven. The lines are being drawn between the people still mourning the world that existed before the pandemic, and the people born after the pandemic who will never understand how bad it was and wish people would just get over it. This episode has some fun moments, like Lori Petty’s character and the surprisingly workable Shakespearean costumes made with golf gloves. But there’s also a shocking development that was set up almost from the start of the episode; it’s just not the one you think it’s going to be.

In another shocking development, Kathryn recaps two episodes of Star Trek: Lower Decks, and Elizabeth is shocked to realize that she’d forgotten an entire storyline that can be summed up as “Rutherford’s clone cave-baby.”

We’ve clearly been kidnapped by aliens and replaced with clones who are much better at watching movies, because this week we caught up on a show that’s only four years old, and watched a movie that’s still in the theater. (Then of course we watched a movie 18 years after it came out, so maybe this is the real Binary System Crew after all. OR IS IT? No, it totally is.)

First up we go over an absolutely grim episode of Station Eleven, going back in time to see how Miranda’s relationship went up in flames (literally), then jumping forward to see how the whole world went up in flames. (Figuratively. Mostly.)

After that we do a quick look at Wes Anderson’s The Phoenician Scheme, which we absolutely love but it’s hard to describe other than saying “It’s very Wes Andersony.” (The man loves him some horizontal tracking shots oh yes he does.)

Finally we rolled our eyes a little at 2007’s 28 Weeks Later: it’s got some cool explosions, some intense action, and young Jeremy Renner is very cute, but it lost the charm of the original, unfortunately. (They needed to STICK TO THE RULES. – Kathryn) (Don’t LOGIC THE PLOT, KATHRYN. – Elizabeth)

Binary System Podcast #462 – WTNV #270 “Deeper Than Purpose, Older Than Thought”, Love Death + Robots, and Star Trek: Lower Decks

The Welcome To Night Vale writers decided to prepare for the July hiatus by wrapping up two storylines this episode. And we can thank good-natured, heart-of-the-podcast Steve Carlsburg for both of them. The mysterious Labyrinth corporation will no longer be sending Night Vale citizens to perform illicit deeds in the desert, and the supply chain problem won’t be causing any more problems, ie: Cecil having to use a laptop that’s more than eight days old. Like a savage.

In other news, Kathryn watched another episode of Star Trek: Lower Decks (it was silly, but it’s a Ferengi episode, it was always going to be silly). And we both watched the last two remaining episodes of the latest season of Love, Death, and Robots. Short summary: “How Zeke Got Religion” has a solid story with fantastic images and a terrifying antagonist. And we kiiinda think we liked “The Screaming of the Tyrannosaur” better.

Binary System Podcast #461 – WTNV #269 “A Story About Me”, Love Death + Robots, Station Eleven, and Star Trek Lower Decks.

“My GOD the way this show delivers information…”

We’ve got a lot to cover this week, starting with what’s quickly becoming our favorite kind of Night Vale episode: a Steve Carlsberg story! (Seriously, ten years ago we loved to hate him as much as Cecil did, now we think he’s practically the heart of Night Vale, how did that happen?)

After that we do a quick recap of the Love Death + Robots episode “Smart Appliances, Stupid Owners.” (Short version: it’s fine. It’s very short, and very silly. Also “Creature Comforts” did it better. But we loved the voices.)

Then we jump into episode 2 of Station Eleven, which doesn’t end up being a very long recap because there’s mostly just ONE SCENE we want to talk about. If you watched it, you know which one we mean. The bit with the text messages. Yiiikes.

Finally we wrap up with two episodes of Star Trek Lower Decks: the one where the Betazoids are making everybody go crazy OR ARE THEY, and the one where Tendi goes to her sister’s pirate wedding. (Tendi being a reluctant badass will never stop being the absolute best.)

Binary System Podcast
Binary System Podcast #460 – Station Eleven series premiere, with special guest Hannah

The Binary System Podcast team has been getting a little better at TV lately, but we’re still three years late in watching Station Eleven (based on the best-selling book that Kathryn reviewed way back in 2014). Fortunately, younger sister Hannah was visiting last weekend and we needed a topic to discuss so she could do a guest appearance on the podcast, which provided us the perfect excuse to start watching it already.

We’re only one episode in so far (well, two of us are. Hannah’s already watched the whole series because she’s way better at TV), and this is shaping up to be a perfect adaptation. Multiple characters (played by fantastic actors) across multiple timelines, the stories of how a civilization-ending pandemic started are intercut with hauntingly beautiful images of an apocalypse that’s had a couple of decades to settle in. The episode has moments of quiet humor, and growing panic, and a tension that doesn’t let up the entire time.

We took a few moments to talk about another Hannah-recommendation: Jentry Chau Versus The Underworld. And we had to to digress to talk about other apocalypse-pandemic properties (The Stand, 28 Days Later), and to finalize our own apocalypse plan. If you’re curious about what we’re doing when it all kicks off, the party’s at our grandmother’s library.
