How Kids With Dyslexia Learn Differently

I've been saying for years that dyslexia is a learning difference, not a learning disability. Kids with dyslexia learn differently.

Today I am sharing from my nearly 30 years parenting and homeschooling my 7 kids with dyslexia how kids with dyslexia learn differently and how we can teach them differently to accommodate this different way of learning.

Why I am thankful for my kids' dyslexia

With Thanksgiving right around the corner, I've been thinking about things I'm thankful for and realized that I am indeed thankful for my kids' dyslexia.

Despite the hardships early on in our family's dyslexia journey, there have been a lot of valuable lessons learned.

What once seemed like a curse on my family has turned out to be the opposite. All of my adult kids with dyslexia are finding success in the world despite their early learning struggles.

Beyond the Box Learning
Welcome to the Beyond the Box Learning Podcast

Hi, everyone.

I'm Marianne Sunderland, the host of the Beyond the Box Learning podcast.

I initially started the podcast to record blog posts on my website: Homeschooling With Dyslexia. Since dyslexia is genetic, a large percentage of my website readers are also dyslexic and prefer to listen than to read.

But more recently, I began recording short podcast episodes in response to your questions and you guys are loving it.

So moving forward, podcast episodes will come about once a week, and almost always be short, no more than 15 minutes; short enough to consume while cleaning the kitchen or folding the laundry. My kind of podcast!

My hope is that these easy-to-consume sessions with tips and encouragement will help you, as you seek to give the outside the box learners in your life the kind of education that they need, the best education possible, all while helping you to stay encouraged that you are indeed able to teach your smart but struggling kids at home

A little bit about me. I'm the mom of 8 kids, 7 with dyslexia and some of our cousins, Dysgraphia, Dyscalculia and ADHD.

I'm also a certified Orton-Gillingham dyslexia tutor, a bestselling author, an educational consultant, and a speaker. All of this grew out of my love for my kids, and my belief that they were smart, but learned differently, or in other words - Beyond the Box Learners.

As of this recording, 5 of my 7 kids have graduated from homeschool high school and are finding success in the world, not despite their learning differences, but because of them.

So in this podcast I will be sharing everything from research-based teaching tips to encouragement for the hard days.

And if you're new here, check out the show notes below for other ways that you can get connected to me.

I'm glad that you're here, and I will see you next week!

When Dyslexic Kids Get Teased

Today I'm answering the question asking what to do when an older dyslexic child gets teased for their weak reading or writing skills.

As a bonus question, I'm also answering what to do when a younger sibling begins to read better than an older dyslexic sibling.

As the mom of 8 kids, I have lots of experience with this!
