In 2018, serial entrepreneur Anu Bhardwaj launched a project inspired by a simple, brilliant insight from her 7-year-old daughter, Arya: if you want adults to understand cryptocurrency, teach their kids first. And so, Krypto 4 Kids (K4K) was born. What began as a two-day event quickly evolved into a financial literacy app - focused on crypto -  designed in collaboration with the K4K cohort and presentations by the kids themselves to world leaders at the United Nations. But then, overnight, it vanished. The app disappeared from the App Store, the partner company went silent, and a project that came together in months fell apart just as quickly. For two years, it seemed like the story was over - a discontinued app and a broken promise to a group of kids who’d worked so hard. But the project's next chapter was sparked, once again, by Arya. After learning how school closures were affecting girls in the developing world, she asked, "We've got tokens in the Krypto for Kids wallet. Can we send it to them?" That single question led Anu to found Sheqonomi, a global audio platform built to advance learning and opportunity through podcasts for women and girls - even those without access to a smartphone.In the final episode of Season Two, Anu joins Brenda to share this incredible story of failure, resilience, and reinvention. Have those two letters shown up in just about every app you use - whether you want them to or not? Yeah. Same. These days, it seems like  you can’t go an hour without hearing that Artificial Intelligence is going to radically remake our world. But… is it? There’s so much hype it can be hard to really know what people even mean when they say AI. It  can’t all be ChatGPT helping you with cover letters and AI-generated images of the Balenciaga Pope, can it? Dr. Timnit Gebru is one of the voices speaking loudly and honestly about AI outside of the Big Tech hype bubble. And she has the bonafides to back that up. Timnit holds a BA, Masters and a PhD in Electrical Engineering and Computer Vision from Stanford. Plus, She co-led Google’s Ethical AI research team… until, in 2020, she and her co-lead sounded the alarm about the potential harms of large language models in a paper they titled “On the Dangers of Stochastic Parrots: Can Language Models Be Too Big.”  That paper led to an abrupt end to her time at Google. But Timnit hasn’t stopped working on how AI and Machine Learning can be developed in ways that serve all communities - most recently as the co-founder and Executive Director of DAIR. At 16, Shellye Archambeau already knew she wanted to be a CEO. And early in her career at IBM, after closing a massive deal with RiteAid, it felt like she was well on her way. But then, at the last minute, the deal fell through. Shellye felt utterly defeated - until a conversation with her husband helped her realize that there had been a failure … but that didn’t mean she was a failure. Shellye went on to have a thriving career at IBM and beyond, with the lessons learned from that early setback helping her overcome all the challenges she faced along the way. By the time Shellye became CEO of the software company Metricstream, she felt like she was ready to handle anything. But then the Great Recession of 2008 hit. Just like that, business dried up. Suddenly, Shellye was faced with one of the most difficult decisions of her career. Would they fold? Or would they fight? Amanda Bickerstaff had a plan and a goal.  When she transitioned from being a teacher in NY to working in Ed Tech, she knew she wanted to make it to CEO - and that the only jobs she’d take would be the ones that would get her one step closer to the C-Suite. In the fall of 2019, at only 39 years old, she moved to Australia to make that goal a reality as the newly minted CEO of an Ed Tech Company whose founding CEO had needed to step back from the role. It was a dream job. Until it became a nightmare. Leading a startup is always a huge challenge, but Amanda found herself on the other side of the world, locked down during COVID, and caught between her role as an Executive CEO and the company’s founders who just couldn’t seem to let go and let her to do the job they’d hired her for. So what did Amanda do? Like a lot of ambitious entrepreneurs, she threw herself even more deeply into the role. But 100 hour weeks, sleepless nights, and the lack of trust between her and the company’s founders soon became untenable. Amanda found herself having to choose between her own well-being and the position she’d been working so hard for. How did Amanda find a way to turn a dream opportunity turned nightmare into the groundwork for the thriving, fulfilling, and successful role she has today as the Co-Founder and CEO of AI For Education? But back when she was in the middle stages of her career, a toxic work environment, and its effects on her, nearly derailed it all. On the one hand, from a job performance standpoint, she was killing it. She was at the top of her game, giving talks, winning awards, and leading her team to success. On the other hand, that same success seemed to paint a target on her back. She was constantly being criticised for seemingly contradictory reasons. No matter what she did she felt like she couldn’t win, and she found herself questioning her every move.  It was full on fight or flight mode… All. The. Time. And it was only a matter of time before she reached her breaking point - alone in her office, crying under her desk, desperately wishing she could escape her situation somehow. Rebecca’s story could have ended there - with her leaving her job, and maybe her field, and never returning.  Instead, she did something brave - she openly took a mental health break, creating the space for healing that would eventually help her understand what had happened, and how she could make sure it never happened again. In this episode, Rebecca tells Brenda about what she learned from that lowest of low experiences, how she came to realize that not everyone deserves a seat at your validation table, and why it’s so important to realize failing at something does not make you a failure. Marco Polo CEO, Vlada Borthnik, almost said no to being on our podcast. It wasn’t that she wasn’t a fan of AnitaB.org or didn’t believe in its mission, it was that we’d asked her to talk about failure… and Vlada almost totally rejects the notion of “failure” on principle. Instead, Vlada advocates for throwing away the binary lens of “success” and “failure” and instead to reframe things as experiments and their outcomes.  Because even when the outcome isn’t what you’d hoped for, you can still learn from it. And maybe that learning will set you up for a different outcome next time. Fortunately for us, Vlada came around. In 2014, former teacher turned recruiter, April Christina Curley, got offered her dream job - a major tech company asked her to come on board specifically to create a talent pipeline for overlooked tech talent at historically black colleges and universities. Without hesitation, April said yes, packed up her things, and moved from Baltimore to NY. At first, things were great - the program April helped create was a success. She was driving real change and making a real difference. But it didn’t last. Despite its good intentions, April saw policies and practices within the company itself that were rooted in historic biases.  And when she spoke out, she was increasingly chastised by management for being “angry, insubordinate, uncooperative, unwelcoming” and more. This despite the fact that her work was objectively successful and her peers had no problem with her. By 2020 April’s dream job had become a nightmare.  And then, just like that, she was let go. In this episode, April opens up to Brenda about what it’s like when you speak truth to power at the office and months later find yourself out of a job. The second half of season 2 is all about the view from the bottom: what does it feel like to fail, and more importantly, how do you come back from it? Anita Borg had already made a name for herself in systems. The two met at a party and became fast friends. Among all the things they bonded over was, of course, their shared experiences as women in tech. And the ways they both tried to deal with the glaring disparity between men and women in the industry. Here’s a question; how much water do you think a single query of ChatGPT consumes? What about Carbon Emissions? How many round trip flights between New York and San Francisco equal the Co2 emitted by training one Large Language Model? And maybe this is the most important one - how would you even figure those numbers out when the big AI companies don’t make them public? Concerns about AI’s impact on Climate Change aren’t new, but as extreme weather events like the floods in North Carolina and the wild fires in L.A. become more and more frequent, a lot of us are wondering just how much blame we should lay at AI’s doorstep. How can we make sure that we take our planet into account while continuing to develop this technology? To help us understand the real cost of all our ChatGPT queries and Dall-E diversions, we’re talking to two women who are both fighting for more transparency around these very questions. Dr. Sasha Luccioni, the Climate Lead at AI company Hugging Face, has chosen to fight for more sustainable AI from within an AI company. On the other hand, Yoca Arditi-Rocha, executive director at the CLEO Institute is deeply skeptical that businesses will choose to put the planet above profit on their own accord.  Can an Insider approach lead to climate-safe AI? Let’s start with the obvious - There is no putting the AI genie back in the bottle. And frankly, as an organization run by technologists and dedicated to advancing women in tech, we wouldn’t necessarily want to. We believe in the promise of technology. But that doesn’t mean there isn’t a lot to be concerned about with how AI has been developing so far.  Near the top of that list for almost everyone is the question “Is AI going to steal my job?”  For many creatives, that reality of being replaced by generative AI is already feeling frighteningly possible. So in this episode we take a look at the possible impact of AI on our careers through their eyes. How do we create an ethical world where human workers are valued while still developing AI as a powerful force for good? Can we trust that world to be built by AI companies themselves? Or do activists on the outside of Silicon Valley have to fight to make it real? We started this season by asking what’s the best way to create real change - inside or outside of the established system? But sometimes it feels like the systems we’re trying to improve are just too entrenched; it can be hard to imagine any approach being successful. And there might not be anyplace where that feels more true than in our politics. But Jennifer Knox, the National Director of Organizing and Tech for the Working Families Party doesn’t believe we have to be stuck with the system we have.  WFP is a third party that recruits and runs their own candidates. But they’re also an activist organization that advocates for election reforms and supports major party candidates when they see it as the most effective path for change. In a sense, the Working Families Party is both outside and inside the system. And what’s more, they’re at the forefront of using better tech and better data to do the one thing that really matters in any election - win. We talk about balancing sweeping change with practical realities, Fusion Tickets, Ranked Choice Voting and how WFP responded when the major parties blocked their access to the main voter data platform — naturally, they built their very own from the ground up.  Most of us can’t imagine a day when we’ll have more than two political parties in the U.S… but after this conversation with Jennifer, you just might change your mind.
