In this powerful episode, host Rashidah sits down with Erica Johnson, a remarkable mother, advocate, and law school graduate whose story embodies strength, perseverance, and purpose.
Born and raised in Bakersfield, California, Erica became a mom during her final year of college. Her son, Sean, was diagnosed with autism at just 3 years old — a moment that forever changed the direction of her life. Balancing single motherhood, full-time work, and law school at night, Erica refused to give up on her dreams.
Through every obstacle, she found her “why” in her son. Her determination led her to earn both her Bachelor of Arts degree and a Juris Doctor degree, turning her personal challenges into a powerful mission of advocacy.
Today, Erica is the founder of the Speak 4 Me Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to empowering families and individuals with special needs. Her journey is a testament to courage, faith, and the unbreakable spirit of mothers who refuse to be defined by circumstance.

In this week’s powerful episode of Autism for Badass Moms, host Rashidah sits down with Emely Vanessa Zavala, a proud Latina mom from Los Angeles whose story will touch your heart.
At just 2 years old, Emely’s son Justin was diagnosed with autism — and like so many of us, she thought the hardest part was behind her. But when Justin turned 8, his aggressive meltdowns and self-injurious behavior became more than Emely could manage alone. As a single mother without a support system, she faced one of the most painful decisions a parent can ever make: finding a home away from home for her child.
In this heartfelt conversation, Emely opens up about the quiet grief that followed, the strength it took to keep going, and how she turned her pain into purpose by advocating for other parents walking similar paths. Today, she continues her journey — balancing motherhood, advocacy, and her studies in Sociology — determined to be a voice for those who feel unseen and unheard.

In this episode of Autism for Badass Moms, we sit down with Bronx native and powerhouse mom, Debbie Mercado, 47, who has faced life's toughest moments with strength, humor, and heart.
Debbie is the proud mother of three beautifully unique children: a 26-year-old trans daughter, a 15-year-old autistic son named Logan, and a 12-year-old daughter who’s making moves on the basketball court. Logan was diagnosed with autism between the ages of 3 and 4, with cognitive delays that made Debbie’s solo parenting journey even more challenging.
Debbie opens up about the heartbreaking losses that forever changed her path. In 2016, she lost her children's father, which shook her to her core. She thought she’d never have to walk that road alone again — until 2020, when her new partner passed away during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.
But through all the grief and hardship, Debbie found healing and power in perspective. Her unwavering commitment to motherhood, education, and self-growth led her to embrace her story — not as a burden, but as a badge of survival and resilience.
Now working full time as a Paraprofessional in the NYC DOE D75 division, Debbie continues to uplift others with her motto: “Turn what you’re going through into something — make it a teachable moment. ”This episode is a heartfelt reminder that even through unimaginable pain, badass moms rise — and they don’t do it quietly.

In this powerful episode, we journey to the United Kingdom to hear from Grace Mbuthia, a devoted mother of three. Grace opens up about raising her eldest daughter, 13-year-old Lexi, who was diagnosed with autism at age 3—alongside other complex medical conditions including Selective Mutism, Hydrocephalus, and Epilepsy.
Grace shares how the early years were filled with confusion, as Lexi didn’t present with the typical signs of autism. With so many overlapping medical concerns, the autism diagnosis initially felt like another label being added. But over time, Lexi’s ability to mask became clearer.
Through humor, resilience, and unwavering love, Grace reflects on the past ten years of advocacy, growth, and learning. She also discusses her work in the care sector, supporting vulnerable adults and her growing efforts to serve children and families navigating similar challenges.
This episode is a moving reminder that autism often doesn’t come alone—and that no mom has to walk this path in isolation.
