In this podcast, consultant and native bee expert Alyssa Gooley talks to Leoni Kojetin from the Australian Macadamia Society about why native bees are suited to macadamia production. How many different species of native bees are there in Australia and which species are we likely to encounter in orchards? How many bees are there in the average hive, how far do they forage, how do you manage bee hives in an orchard and what is their susceptibility to pests and diseases ? If you are a macadamia grower interested in promoting native bees, wild and managed in your orchard, then this podcast outlines where to start.

In this AMS podcast, Leoni Kojetin from the Australian Macadamia Society, talks to Dr Karina Griffin, plant pathologist and crop protection consultant with the AMS and Chris Fuller, plant protection and orchard management consultant and grower liaison officer, about the evolution of integrated pest management and the use of drop sheets as a monitoring technique.
In this episode we're talking about biodiversity in a macadamia orchard and what it actually means. Leoni Kojetin, the industry development manager for the Australian Macadamia Society speaks with guests Alan and Jarrah Coates of Coates Horticulture.
In this AMS podcast, AMS industry development manager Leoni Kojetin chats to Helen Wallace, Professor of Agricultural Ecology at Griffith University in Queensland.
Professor Wallace has been a macadamia researcher for more than 20 years and is part of a team of researchers investigating pollination in a number of crops including macadamia.
The research is funded by the Hort Frontiers Pollination Fund and has shown that better pollination has the potential to improve yields and increase kernel recovery.
Professor Wallace summarises the major findings to date, explains the latest paternity testing techniques (mass array and genotype by sequencing), outlines recent work on large mono-varietal blocks, and details a large experiment that added 1 tonne per hectare with good pollination.
Leoni Kojetin Industry Development Manager for the Australian Macadamia Society, speaks with Australia’s Dr Chris Searle (from MacAvo Consulting) and South Africa’s Mark Penter (from the Agricultural Research Council) about the use of ethrel in macadamias.
In episode 2 of the AMS podcast, Leoni Kojetin Industry Development Manager for the Australian Macadamia Society speaks with water use experts Dr. Dan Manson (from Australia) and Theunis Smit from South Africa on the interrelationship between nutrient management and irrigation management. How are growers currently using nutrients to manage their crop? Why is it critical to know your orchard’s soil type and to understand how nutrients are moving in your soil? Dan and Theunis answer these questions and much more in this podcast.
In episode 1 Leoni Kojetin Industry Development Manager for the Australian Macadamia Society speaks with macadamia water use experts Theunis Smit (from South Africa) and Dr. Dan Manson (from Australia). How much water do macadamias use daily in Summer and Winter? What is the best use of the water you have (how much and when should you irrigate)? What monitoring tools are essential for understanding tree stress? Theunis and Dan cover these questions and more in this podcast.
