Are We Witches?
Sarah Drummond & Lisa Marmur
21 episodes

Welcome to Are We Witches?

A podcast for the witch-curious and the skeptical, hosted by two witches-in-training, Lisa Marmur and Sarah Drummond.

We’re two friends diving headfirst into the enchanting world of modern witchcraft for the very first time. Together, we’ll explore magical realms, learn how to charge crystals, brew a little mischief, and maybe even tell the future. We have no idea what we’re doing (yet), but we’re here to document the journey—warts and all.

Our quest will take us through the history of witchcraft, unpacking its feminist, divine, beautiful, and problematic aspects. By understanding how magic shaped the world, we hope to uncover where magic still thrives today.

If magic is real, we’re here to find it.

So, are we witches? Are you?

Join us every second Tuesday by the cauldron as we brew up some tea and see where the magic takes us.

We couldn’t do it without you. Because, after all, it takes a village to raise a witch.

Are We Witches?
Are We Witches...At Halloween?

It’s our first video episode! Watch it on YouTube!

Lisa and Sarah celebrate Halloween by surprising each other with costumes and tracing the festival’s roots in Samhain, the Celtic fire-festival that marked summer’s end and the thinning of the veil. From guising and soul cakes to Margaret Hamilton’s poisonous green makeup, we explore how Samhain became Halloween, and Sarah fills us in on some of the scariest witch stories from around the world. Plus, in Show and Spell, we try a little apple-peel and candy divination to see if our true love’s initials appear.

Are We Witches?
Are We Witches...Haunted?

Ghosts never really go out of fashion, they just change platforms. Once they rapped on tables and floated in candlelight; now they flicker on YouTube and whisper through spirit boxes.

As spooky season begins, Lisa and Sarah ask: Are we witches…haunted?

From witch-ghosts in England, Scotland, and Salem to Houdini’s showdown with the Witch of Lime Street, they trace how women became history’s translators between worlds. Plus, a Ouija board experiment and a cemetery ritual for spooky season.

Are We Witches?
What's Up, Witches? #3

In this latest magical check-in episode, Lisa and Sarah take the opportunity to discuss storytelling in the form of myth and folklore (hello again, Medea and Baba Yaga!), fidelity discourse, with much more added to their reading list; primarily No Friend to This House and Encountering Dragonfly.

The re-enchanted life continues with rainbow synchronicities, familiars, and a magic stick thrown to the River Thames*. Sarah and Lisa also enjoy a tarot spread based on the theme of creation, taken from the Tarot Vin workbook, contemplating the power of the Magician card paired with Cabernet Sauvignon.

What’s Up, Witches? episodes will pop into the feed every now and then as a way for our co-hosts to take stock of where they are on their witchy journey.

Are We Witches?
Are We Witches...In Mythology?

Witches appear across mythology at critical turning points - indispensable in service to heroes, yet often discarded once their role is fulfilled. This week, Lisa and Sarah discuss Circe’s penchant for pigification, the dangerous devotion of Medea, the Witch of Endor’s risky necromancy, Norse völur, and the enduring worship of Hecate, Goddess of Witchcraft.

Sarah shares the magic woven into her recent house move, while a listener writes in with a re-enchanted synchronicity all the way from Utah.

Uncertain about worship but enchanted by the stories, Lisa and Sarah invite you to spend some time in the company of these magical, mythical muses.

Are We Witches?
Are We Witches? Not Without Internet

The gods have clearly conspired against us! Our planned episode Are We Witches in Mythology? will now be released on September 16th. Sarah has just moved house and is still waiting on BT to weave the threads of her internet connection, so we’re taking a short pause.

In the meantime, we’d love to hear from you. If you have a story, thought, or bit of everyday magic you’d like to share, get in touch at arewewitches@gmail.com or send us a DM on Instagram at @arewewitches.

Thank you for your patience. We can’t wait to be back in your feed soon.

Are We Witches?
Are We Witches…Re-enchanted?

In this very special episode, Lisa and Sarah share The Real Question’s conversation between chaplain Mauricio Bruce and author Brooke Williams (Encountering Dragonfly: Notes on the Practice of Re-enchantment). Together they explore synchronicity, Jung’s active imagination, and what it means to live an enchanted life today.

Afterward, Lisa and Sarah return with “How’s Tricks?”—beetles, dragonflies, mysterious cats, and dreams included—and reflect on how coincidences, storytelling, and even math (hello, Ramsey Theory!) can help us practice re-enchantment in a skeptical world.

Plus: listener mail on serendipity in Wellington and a dive into active imagination.

Are We Witches?
Are We Witches...Under the Influence?

This week, Lisa Marmur and Sarah Drummond ask a deliciously intoxicating question: are we witches under the influence? From broomstick balms to biodynamic Burgundy, this episode dives deep into the relationship between witches and altered states, whether induced by plants, potions, mushrooms, or fermented magic. From medieval “flying ointments” made with deadly nightshades to modern ayahuasca ceremonies and the psychedelic rituals of ancient Mesoamerica, we examine what’s history, what’s myth, and what might still be very much in practice.

Are We Witches?
Are We Witches...In the Forest?

Lisa and Sarah step into the wild to meet the forest witches. From Baba Yaga’s chicken-legged hut deep in the woods to the eerie whispers of the Blair Witch, the forest has always been cast as a place of danger, magic, and transformation.

In this episode, we explore the lore and symbolism of the forest witch: the old crone in the clearing, the healer at the edge of the village, the spirit of wild nature itself. We ask: What were forest witches in folklore? And who are they now?

Join us as we untangle the roots of this enduring archetype.

Whether you're deep in the woods or just witch-curious, this one’s for you.

Bonus Minisode: Solstice Listener Mail

Happy Solstice, witches!

In this special minisode, Lisa and Sarah are prompted by a listener question to consider how they will be spending their respective solstices in opposite hemispheres.

They discuss the spirit of the season in Lisa's mid winter, harnessing the power of the sun as Sarah approaches the longest day of the year, and the simplest way to celebrate for witches everywhere.

Many thanks to Nicole for sending in her question. To find out more about the Melbourne indigenous people's local calendar you can visit https://www.herringisland.org/seasons.htm

Wishing everyone a happy solstice this June 21st and wherever you are, turn your face towards the sun.

Are We Witches?
Are We Witches...In Capitalism?

What do witches have to do with capitalism? Quite a lot, actually.

In this episode, we trace the figure of the witch through history and explore how she’s been shaped and sold by shifting economic systems.

From early modern witch hunts to today’s crystal kits and curated spell boxes, we dig into the rise of “witch capitalism” and ask what happens when magic meets the marketplace.

Plus, Lisa visits a witch’s market, tries out a money spell, and we answer a listener question about how to cut ties.

Ritual, power, and profit—join us for a deep dive into the strange intersection of witches and capitalism.

A big thanks to Monika for her letter!

Are We Witches?
Are We Witches...Embodied?

In this episode, Lisa and Sarah discuss how society has used the figure of the witch to control and objectify women’s bodies. From the “hag” stereotype to the fear of birthmarks and freckles, they unpack the long history of suspicion, superstition, and shame.

Sarah gets her first palm reading, and the duo responds to a listener’s question: how can we cleanse and reclaim the power of vilified words?

Whether you're witch-curious or a longtime practitioner, join these only-sometimes-skeptical explorers on their spiritual journey, and this week it’s personal. Are we witches embodied?

Are We Witches...In the Stars?

This week, Lisa and Sarah investigate the history of astrology and discuss what, if anything, is written in the stars.

They track astrology from its ancient origins to modern-day, AI-powered apps, check their own compatibility (will these two ever get married?), and invite us all to learn a little more about ourselves through our birth charts.

Are We Witches?
What's Up, Witches? #1

In this special episode, Sarah and Lisa step away from their usual format for a mystical check in. They chat about the modalities they’ve been exploring lately, what’s resonating, and the tools they're excited to try next. Is Lisa’s love manifestation spell from Episode 1 finally working its magic? What do Sarah’s tea leaves reveal about her future? Tune in for all the updates, a dreamy listener submission from friend-of-the-pod Monique, and a cozy dose of chit-chat.

What’s Up, Witches? episodes will pop into the feed every now and then as a way to take stock of where we are on our witchy journey.

Don't forget to check out the tea leaf and tarot pics on Instagram arewewitches and slide into our DMs with your own magical musings!

Are We Witches?
Are We Witches... In Politics?

Join Lisa Marmur and Sarah Drummond as they explore the intersection of politics and witchcraft.

They discuss how political power has historically clashed with witchcraft, the continuing presence of spirituality and the supernatural in politics today, and how the term "witch hunt" is often misused in modern discourse.

Sarah and Lisa also perform their first spell together, calling upon Justice in these challenging times. Plus, they share some listener mail, a theory about the bibliomancy discussed in episode two.

Are We Witches?
Are We Witches... Transforming?

Join Lisa Marmur and Sarah Drummond this week as they explore the theme of transformation in witchcraft.

They examine shapeshifting in its myriad forms, from the historical and violent to the modern and empowering. Lisa's house will be transformed with a deep, energetic cleanse using crystals and smudging. Plus, a listener question and a spell for acceptance.

Whether you're witch-curious or a longtime practitioner, join these only-sometimes-skeptical explorers on this spiritual journey. There is a lot they are unsure of as they embrace this ever changing world, but they are certain they are allies and that is something they need to practice as much as witchcraft.

Listen as they transform their lives, one witching hour at a time.

Are We Witches?
Are We Witches...In the Future?

Join Lisa Marmur and Sarah Drummond as they take a sneaky peek at their future.

They're looking into all manner of divination (mancys? mancies?) as they wrestle with the concept of fate. A magical moment will be shared, tarot cards read, and asparagus will be questioned. They will also rise to the challenge of their first magical request; can our witches in training make the sun come out to cure the winter blues?

Whether you're witch-curious or a longtime practitioner, join these only-sometimes-skeptical explorers on this spiritual journey. Will they become witches this week? Make yourself a cup of loose leaf tea, read that future, and let's find out together.

With special thanks this week to Amy for sending in her letter. Thank you to Maria at Studio Iris and to friend of the podcast, Monika Matošević for having her tarot read with Sarah as well.

We are very grateful to have found the Flying Hedge and such an apt spell for Amy's particular problem. A link to Willow's Depression Banishment Spell with full incantation below:

New Moon Depression Banishment Spell - Flying the Hedge

"Mother Moon on this night,

While candle burns flame of white;

Help me banish this pain I feel,

As it holds no appeal.

This Feeling of despair

Leaves me feeling less than fair.

Help me emerge from this hole,

And release the black upon my soul.

With this candle I cast the darkness out,

And with lavender light is sought.

I no longer need this to hold me back,

And continue to push me off track.

Mother Moon of this night,

Please help me to be alright.

Please stand with me,

And by my will, so mote it be."

And of course thank you Jemima Packington, it was a pleasure to practice your particular form of witchcraft.

Are We Witches?
