Animal Tales EPISODE 44: “Fake News” What to Believe? Credible Sources?
I certainly hope you’ve been missing my podcasts! I’ve taken a little hiatus to do some actual horse training, time with the family, some health issues, and a new grandchild!
As I get back on track, I wanted this new episode to dive into some critical issues surrounding how mainstream media and vocal social media minorities have manipulated the American public (and beyond!) through ‘fake news’ and/or by censoring certain topics and stories. For too long, it seems we’ve been willing to accept much of what’s been presented to us as ‘newsworthy’ or even as fact. But now that the censorship of mainstream and social media platforms has come to light, I am hopeful that we will become more discerning and less likely to accept everything we hear, read, or see at face value.
Through my podcasts, I want to shed light on the profound and far-reaching effects of this manipulation and deception when it comes to animal owners and animal related businesses. I am hopeful that you may just recognize that your beliefs about animal issues/ownership have been intentionally influenced in ways you didn’t even realize.
On behalf of the incredible animal caretakers and owners I know, and most importantly, the animals themselves, I hope you’ll tune in, share this episode, and then revisit past episodes of Heidi Herriott’s Animal Tales and Doggone Good Information, where true animal experts provide valuable insights. Be thoughtful, be curious, explore deeper… There’s always more to the story!
Episode Links You can enjoy both of my podcasts on any of the platforms below, or wherever you get your favorite podcasts.

Animal Tales EPISODE 43: Horse Sense with Clinton Anderson
One of the most popular podcast episodes was a chat with Clinton Anderson, founder of Downunder Horsemanship who talked about horse training with Heidi. The original air date was May 2023, and Clinton certainly tells it like it is! Training our horses is vital to their well-being for life, and Clinton created The Method which, if followed, will create a solid foundation for a well mannered horse, and a basis to build upon. Horses can be trained for a variety of disciplines. In today’s world, people tend to become overly emotional about animals, and this is not healthy for the humans or the animals. This conversation provides a practical look at horse training, owning horses, and even the horse slaughter issue. Not a fun topic, but a very important one! Tune in to hear this dynamic conversation, and then check out the other podcast episode links below for more podcasts about horses.

Animal Tales
Doggone Good Information EPISODE 33: Breaking Down Dog Training; How To Be Successful!
And even more importantly, WHY? The most loving and responsible thing you can do for your dog is make sure they are trained well with a solid foundation. Not only will you and your family get more enjoyment and dependability out of your animal, the dog will also be more comfortable, less anxious and/or aggressive. You MUST step up and be the leader! However, THE most important reason to ensure your dog has a great start with a solid foundation is that this is the one thing you can do to ensure that animal’s wellbeing for life – whether or not you own them their whole life!
Have we got your attention? Now you may be asking, how do I go about that? This episode with Amy Pishner from Valor K9, and those listed in show notes below, will provide a very thorough look at training programs, as well as what works and what does not. Positive Reinforcement only – is this the way forward? Listen in to these episodes to find out why you are not likely to succeed with this mindset and training program. All this and so much more to help you navigate dog training, not break the bank, not rely on excuses, and get the results you want and need to truly do best for your beloved pet!
This episode originally aired in September of 2023, and along with the other episodes on training below in show notes, provides solid insights with a goal of getting your dog trained. You can listen to these wherever you get your favorite podcasts!

Animal Tales EPISODE 42: Everything Elephants!
We LOVE Elephants! These amazing creatures truly hold a special place in our hearts, yet are too often the focus of misguided attention and intense emotion. As I was privileged to grow up with elephants and interact with them throughout my life, I do understand why people are enamored with them. Unfortunately, there is so much misinformation and emotion surrounding elephants that is actually harmful to their existence! That’s why I have recorded several podcasts with elephant experts; those that I turn to with questions or to verify information. I felt it was important for you to hear from them as well. This episode aired initially in the summer of 2023 and is so compelling as Sarah Conley, who works for the International Elephant Foundation, shares fascinating insights, and myth-busting information. The Foundation is truly the leading authority on elephants around the world. You won’t want to miss a moment of this episode! Then I encourage you to check show notes for links to my other podcasts featuring world-renowned elephant experts including a veterinarian, and scientific researcher. After listening to the experts, are you wondering where can you donate to have the biggest impact for elephants and even other species? Tune in to discover where your efforts can truly make a difference! #ThereIsMoreToTheStory

This episode originally aired in March of 2023, and the information and insights shared and still highly relevant, and therefore worthy of revisiting. While the slogan ‘Adopt Don’t Shop’ may sound positive, it is actually more harmful than helpful to not only the animals, but also good folks who are searching for the right dog to welcome into their family. * Biden’s 30×30 agenda intended to turn valuable farm and ranch land into conservation areas
* The potential impact to all of us on the proposed slaughter closure in Colorado
* A proposal to reduce dairy products for food stamp recipients

Doggone Good Information EPISODE 31: The ‘Positive Reinforcement/Force Free’ Dog Training Myth
Hosts Heidi and Tommy are joined by a guest from Down Under, Gary ‘Gaz’ Jackson, who is a world renowned dog trainer and author. Gaz does not mince words about his distaste for the so-called ‘trainers’ who claim to use positive reinforcement only and/or call themselves ‘force free’. There is in fact no scientific training method that employs only positive reinforcement. Gaz and the hosts discuss the 4 quadrants of Operant Conditioning (OP), which is the most universally known and recognized balanced training method (employed by humans as well!). Positive reinforcement is only one of the four quadrants of OP. Links below provide details regarding this legitimate, scientific training method. Gaz has also written books to assist dog owners with the training and behavior of their dogs. Tune in to hear that there is a lot more to the story about successful dog training, and how not to waste your money on a lot of hyperbole that will not likely get your dog trained!

Animal Tales EPISODE 40: ‘Caring About’ VS ‘Caring For’ Animals
Be sure to tune in for a great conversation with Mike Bober, President/CEO of the Pet Advocacy Network. Mike discusses the role of his organization within the pet industry and how they are always in search of solutions to issues, while providing important resources, education and support for pet owners.
Heidi and Mike have a robust discussion that includes…

* Positive legislation – the Healthy Dog Importation Act legislation
* The new CDC new regulations on the import of dogs. Something everyone should be aware of as it affects shelters and rescues, as well as pets and breeders. Also those who might travel abroad with their dogs.
* How/why an urban society has challenges with respect to animals
* Why it’s important to be mindful of science and data surrounding animal issues as opposed to utilizing emotion and philosophy.

The Pet Advocacy Network is truly the voice of experts and animal champions who are concerned not with what sounds or feels good; but what is actually good policy with respect to animals. He reminds us that it’s always about what is truly in the best interest of the animals and pets.

Doggone Good Information EPISODE 30: Local Strays or Imports – Where Are Shelter Dogs From?
This subject matter is the primary reason I launched the Doggone Good Information podcast! This is the ultimate cover up! Every single day there is strong messaging via commercials, media, social media ads and more that we must go adopt a shelter dog. And every day, there are more municipalities and even states considering and enacting retail pet store bans. Is this a good thing? Should you only consider a shelter dog because of overcrowding? There is SO much more to this story!
Our guest, Patti Strand, the founder and President of the National Animal Interest Alliance is a recognized expert and author on the subject, and provides an alternate view point.
Questions to ask when you go to a shelter/rescue to look at dogs to adopt

* Where is this dog or these dogs from?  USA?  Imported from another country?  Another shelter/rescue?
* How long has it been at this shelter?
* Does this dog any special needs, health, or parasite issues?  Any current or ongoing medications?
* Has this dog shown any aggression or have any bite history? (some states like California require disclosure)
* Has this dog been adopted out and returned?    If so, in what time frame?

Are you curious yet? Listen in for some very revealing and important information and statistics, and also to find out what questions you should ask when you go to adopt a dog to ensure the welfare of all dogs as well as human health and well-being.

Animal Tales EPISODE 37: Agriculture: Fact vs Fiction
With well over 90% of Americans being urbanites, it should not be surprising that there is more misinformation than ever about agriculture, livestock, farmers and ranchers. Mainstream media and social media influencers continue to jump on this bandwagon of insisting that animal protein and dairy is bad for us, that cows are bad for the planet, and farmers are out for profit over health and safety. Karen Gerfen Glueck, Vice President, Communications & Strategic Planning for AGPROfessionals, provides a peak into the world of agriculture, addressing fact vs fiction. She highlights how the organization she works for seeks solutions and common ground. Tune in as… #thereismoretothestory

Animal Tales
Doggone Good Information EPISODE 27: Euthanasia – A Difficult Conversation
Animal euthanasia is a complicated topic and evokes strong emotions. As one of the goals of the podcast for hosts Heidi and Tommy is to take a deep dive into difficult and controversial topics regarding dogs, they decided this uncomfortable topic is certainly worthy of discussion. While many groups online are devoted to ‘no kill’ shelters and are firm in their positions, we were disappointed that no one was willing to come on as a guest to discuss their thoughts on the topic. This is discouraging as there needs to be more discussion and transparency surrounding euthanasia. The hosts discuss the scenarios for euthanasia including sick or aggressive animals, as well as overcrowding, and ponder the question… why are we not working together toward solutions? Dealing in facts, stats, and data and setting emotion aside would provide for a much healthier and transparent discussion, and the greater possibility of solutions
Other topics covered:

* The ‘adopt don’t shop’ movement hypocrisy
* Importing/rescuing stray dogs from Puerto Rico and beyond
* Governor Noem statement about killing a dog
* AKC Canine Good Citizen Training program
* American Veterinary Medical Assoc (AVMA) positions on euthanasia

In addition to their own sled dog business, husband Hank has also competed in the Last Great Race – The Iditarod, and Tanya is now a sought after motivational and leadership speaker.
