Episode 13 - Axial Capra Radio Control Crawler Review

Well thanks again for joining me!  Today I'm talking about the Axial Capra RC Crawler.  I've owned this rig for awhile now and wanted to give you my thoughts.  Spoiler alert...I like it!  It's capable, great looking, has good after market support and best of all it's on sale until October 17th, 2022!  Be sure to check out Axial's website  and use the discount code so you can get a great deal on a new Capra.

We have a newly opened RC shop here in Pueblo, CO called Steel City RC.  It's a great group of folks and they are putting a lot of energy into creating a fun RC culture.  This gives me a good place to go indoor crawling when the weather isn't great.  They also host races on Fridays (mini class), Saturdays (1/10 buggy and Short Course) and Sunday (Mini Z).  They carry most of the major brands and are getting new inventory in basically daily! If you're in the Pueblo area be sure to go visit them at the Pueblo Mall across from Boot Barn.

What are your thoughts on the Capra?  Do you own one?  Have you in the past?  Do you plan to get one soon or in the future?  What are your favorite upgrades?

Be sure to visit my website for blogs, content, and more!

Episode 12 - Beginner Bikepacking Trip Gone "Wrong"

Bikepacking is an amazing way to experience places you've never been or even to revisit places you've been but you'd like to experience differently.  With a bike you can cover much more ground thank just backpacking but you still get all the benefits of human powered travel.  In this podcast I talk about an experience with my friend Justin on a bikepacking trip we took to Antonito, CO.  We've made it a point to travel to virtually every town in Colorado and I have an affinity for Antonito.  While I haven't been back I will someday and I hope to do some more bikepacking or outdoor adventuring in the area.

Colorado is a great state for bikepacking.  More and more people are out there doing trails like the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route, The Colorado Trail (the sections that are bike friendly) and others.  It was great to meet another bikepacker while on our adventure!  I hope you like this episode and thanks so much for checking in.  Be sure to visit my blog to read about other adventures!

If you'd like to learn about outdoor adventure and recreation events around Colorado be sure to check out my calendar of events! If you'd like information about adventuring in Colorado you can complete a free adventure request and I can put together a custom adventure for you.  I will have some road trips posted soon too.  Be sure to visit my facebook page www.facebook.com/adventurewithdaniel as well as youtube.com/adventureswithdaniel.

Some of the gear I used on this trip is:

Bob Ibex Trailer

Jamis Coda Sport with a Jones Bar

Hennessy Hammock

SealSkinz Water Proof Socks

Tenkara Rod Co. Fishing Rod

Adventures With Daniel
Episode 11 - Jones Bike - One of the Best Bikes...EVER!

Welcome to the adventures with daniel podcast. Today we discuss the amazing Jones Bike! If you aren’t familiar with the Jones Bike I strongly encourage you to go check out the website here. I currently have the LWB with 3.0 Maxxis tires on it. A bit aggressive for the type of riding I do mostly but I haven’t gotten around to change them out. I also have the Rohloff hub which I love almost as much as the bike itself.

I truly believe comfort should be one of the top priorities in bike selection. The swept back bars of the Jones Bar makes it extremely comfortable, stable and easy to handle. It gives the rider the ability to move the hands into different positions for comfort on longer rides or for those just getting into riding. The grips are extra thick and squishy to increase comfort also. This bike does very well on all types of surfaces and carries all types of loads. This truly is a machine that will take you where you want to go and very little can stop it!

Have you ridden a Jones Bike? Or maybe you own one? What are your thoughts? Would you consider purchasing a high end low production bike or is your preference to stay with something more affordable and entry level? Please visit my website here to check out my blogs, products for sale (coming in 2022), a local outdoor adventure calendar of events and more!

Adventures With Daniel
Episode 10 - Motor Camping - Oh, I Mean Overlanding! An overlanding discussion and book review

I greatly enjoyed this book!  The historical photographs and drawings really helped take me back to a time when these adventurous folks were taking on the rutted dirt roads in vehicles built with little more than a windshield and a soft top.  I love imagining what it would have been like since the car was such a new invention.  It was just then becoming affordable to the masses and people were expanding their adventures.  Getting to national parks was now becoming more free than jumping on a train.  You could pack up your gear and your family, make as many stops along the way, stay virtually wherever you wanted, and go back to work again at the end of your vacation time.

Double bit press did a great job reprinting this book.  Be sure to visit their website doublebitpress.com to purchase the book and other historical reprints!  If you've read this book, share your thoughts with me.  Did you enjoy it as much as I did?  Do you have a desire to jump into one of these vintage rigs outfitted with period correct gear and hit the open road?  Would you have the courage to set out like the folks in did in the 20s?  What was your favorite part of the book?

If you haven't read the book are you encouraged to do so? I sure hope you are!  Be sure to visit my website at adventureswithdaniel.com or email me to discuss this and more or to be on the show.  daniel@adventureswithdaniel.com.  Thanks so much for listening to my thoughts on "The Motor Camping Book" by Elon Jessup.  Until next time, remember to.....ADVENTURE ON!

Episode 9 - Review of the Ribz Pack in 1 Minute or Less!

I've owned the Ribz pack for several years now and it's one of my go to pieces of gear!  I don't always love how fanny packs carry across the chest of the waste and the Ribz pack offers a great alternative.  With the ability to carry this on the front of your torso while still carrying a backpack on your back you can more evenly disburse your weight and put the items you need most often in the Ribz pack.  It works well for conceal carry if you need that option as well.  I highly recommend this piece of gear!  Be sure to check out my youtube review by clicking this link and visiting the Ribz pack website here!

Do you have a Ribz pack?  Have you used something similar?  Let me know what your favorite pieces of gear are!

If you're in Colorado or looking to adventure in the state please visit my website and request a free adventure request.  I've traveled all over the great state of Colorado and I can give you information on camping and outdoor recreation spots you may or may not have ever heard of.  I also host periodic scavenger hunts and have a blog with local adventures and reviews!

Thanks so much for tuning in.  Until the next on, remember to adventure on!

Adventures With Daniel
Episode 8 - Radio Control and RC Crawlers

Radio Control is a great hobby for people of all ages!  On today's podcast we talk specifically about RC Crawlers.  These are scaled down versions of full size off road vehicles.  Many are modeled very closely to their larger brethren while others are not.  The RC crawlers we talk about are true hobby grade radio control vehicles with manufacturer and after market support.  Some of the models I recommend are from the brand Axial or Traxxas.  I've personally owned a TRX4 as well as a TRX6.  I also currently own an Axial Capra, 2 SCX24's and my son has an Axial SCX10 Deadbolt.  My brother has an Axial SCX10, and SCX10.3 a Vanquish VS4, Vanquish Phoenix, and a full custom based on a Gamechanger Chassis.  Each of them serves a different purpose and handles different terrain differently.

Obviously if you're just getting into the hobby you won't be needing several RC's but you may be surprised how quickly your collection grows!  Get your neighbors involved, your kids, uncles, nephews, aunts, brothers and everyone else involved!  If you have any questions about RC or RC crawlers just send me an email and we can talk through it.  I can give you information from my experiences and hopefully learn from you too.  You can check out my local facebook group for RC crawlers, bashers, drifters and more at https://www.facebook.com/groups/1155675568535068

Episode 7 - 5 Myths of Overlanding

Today on the Adventures With Daniel podcast I discuss 5 myths of overlanding!  I think overlanding is a great hobby for families or individuals.  Somethings I think it's portrayed as something that only people with high end and highly modified adventure rigs can really enjoy.  I don't believe that at all!  You probably have everything you need already to go out on your first overlanding trip right now!

Here are the myths we discuss in this episode

  1. You need a 4x4 to be a trued overlander
  2. You need specialized overlanding gear
  3. Staying in state and national parks isn't true overlanding
  4. You have to spend a lot of money to be a true overlander
  5. You must have a fridge to be a true overlander

Thanks so much for listening.  What are some myths you've heard about overlanding?  What type of overlanding gear did you start out with?  Don't forget to visit my website adventureswithdaniel.com to request a FREE custom adventure request!  If you're in Colorado or coming to visit I can put together a custom adventure itinerary for you.  You can visit me at facebook.com/adventurewithdaniel or youtube.com/adventureswithdaniel.  Until the next one, remember to ADVENTURE ON!

Adventures With Daniel
Episode 6- Ultimate Urban Assault Vehicle

There are many ways to navigate urban environments.  Cars, mass transit, walking, rideshare programs like Uber, and cycling.  Many people overlook what I believe to be the ultimate urban assault vehicle, the kick scooter!  Don't go clicking off the episode quite yet.  Maybe you've never considered the kick scooter as a viable transportation option.  Maybe you've seen kids on kick scooters but didn't even know there are adult options available.  You probably rode a scooter as a kid so why let your age get between you and the joy a kick scooter can bring!

Beyond the sheer fun there's also the benefit of speed and grace.  A kick scooter can easily cover distances of 5-8 miles in an hour.  You can zip down a block in the blink of an eye.  The scooter has a narrow profile which allows it to be ridden in densely populated (or less densely populated areas too!) without needing a ton of space like a bicycle might need.  The scooter is easy to step on and off and the speed can be adjusted easily by applying the breaks or coasting further between kicks.

Kick scooters are a great form of exercise.  If you're unable to job or run for example you could easily jump on a scooter! It's much easier on your bones and joints.  Maybe you're overweight and looking for a low impact exercise to help reduce your weight.  Get on a kick scooter!

Kick scooters are a family friendly activity.  People of all ages and skill levels can jump on and be having fun in little or no time.  I truly think you'll enjoy being on a kick scooter.  If you're one of the people who already have a kick scooter send me an email and tell me what you love most about it!  What brand do you have?  How long have you been scooting?  I'd love to hear from you.

Please visit my website adventureswithdaniel.com and check out the adventure blogs I've posted.  If you're looking for outdoor recreation or adventure ideas you can send a custom adventure request to me and I can put together an itinerary for you.  Thanks so much for listening.  Please email me or get in touch if you'd like to be a guest on the show!

Episode 5 - Roof Top Tents for Car Camping and Overlanding

In this episode I compare and contract two different types of hard side roof top tents.  The "Pillbox" vs the "Wedge".  Each serves the similar purpose of giving you a dry warm place to sleep at night but they do it in slightly different ways.  I don't have personal experience with the soft sided RTT's so I can't speak to those at the moment but I do have personal experience with both of these!

If you're into overlanding you've probably heard of rooftop tents already!  They really are a great option for quick camp setup and ease of use.  They aren't affordable though and the cost may prohibit some buyers from getting a hard side rooftop tent.  Even if you just car camp a lot (a form of overlanding) you may benefit from using a roof top tent!  Imagine being able to sleep comfortable in an elevated platform above a rocky ground.  Or sleeping high above a muddy area or an area with snakes, predators, or creep crawlies!  You can start to see why a rooftop tent (RTT as they are often referred to) is a sweet option.

My Roofnest is built well and lives up to it's name as a premium rooftop tent manufacturer.  There are more affordable options though if the Roofnest is out of your budget.  Do you have an RTT already?  Is your preference a wedge type or a pillbox type?  Is yours mounted to your vehicle or to a trailer?  Have you made any modifications to your RTT that you can share?

Please remember to head over to adventureswithdaniel.com and submit a request for a FREE custom adventure!  You provide information with various things you'd like to see or do in your adventure and I use my knowledge and experience in the great outdoors of Colorado to put together a custom itinerary!  If you like camping by a river, no problem!  Maybe you want to ride your mountain bike along beautiful singletrack and pop a tent for an overnighter, I can help point you in the right direction with that too!  You can sign up for my upcoming newsletter and read the blogs I've written as well.

Thanks so much for listening.  I truly appreciate the time you take to like and comment as well.  You can find me on Facebook or on Youtube also.  I've recently started a Facebook group for Pueblo Area Outdoor Recreation so if you're in the Pueblo, CO area you should connect there as well!  And check out the Pueblo West Activities Group I put together too!
