A Year of Last Things: Poems by Michael Ondaatje
Please visit https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/1/audiobook/703072 to listen full audiobooks. Title: A Year of Last Things: Poems Author: Michael Ondaatje Narrator: Michael Ondaatje Format: Unabridged Audiobook Length: 2 hours 10 minutes Release date: March 19, 2024 Genres: Poetry Publisher's Summary: From one of the most influential writers of his generation, a gorgeously surprising poetry collection about memory, history, and the act of looking back Following several of his internationally acclaimed novels, A Year of Last Things is Michael Ondaatje’s long-awaited return to poetry. In pieces that are sometimes witty, sometimes moving, and always wise, we journey back through time by way of alchemical leaps, unearthing writings by revered masters, moments of shared tenderness, and the abandoned landscapes we hold on to to rediscover the influence of every border crossed. Moving from a Sri Lankan boarding school to Molière’s chair during his last stage performance, to Bulgarian churches and their icons, to the California coast and his beloved Canadian rivers, Michael Ondaatje casts a brilliant eye that merges memory with the present, in the way memory as the distant shores of art and lost friends continue to influence everything that surrounds him. From his poem 'His chair, a narrow bed, a motel room, the fox':      At the Hacienda Motel in Los Angeles Sam Cooke was shot dead.      ‘See that shadow on the wall . . .’ All those motels and hotels      in literature and song, where X wrote this,      where Y got drunk, where Z overdosed.      The one Hank Williams was driven past, dead already in his car.      The Slavianski Bazaar Hotel in 'The Lady with a Dog,'      where Dmitri imagines their dark but hopeful future.      The Hôtel de ville de Courtrai, where Verlaine shot Rimbaud.      The Casa Verdi in Milan, where retired opera singers were welcomed      along with various heteronyms of Fernando Pessoa in their afterlife.

Jeder findet etwas, was ihm 'schmeckt'. Also doch Essen? Nun ja ... der Geist braucht schließlich auch Nahrung. Ich frage mich: Was wirst Du finden und mögen?

An Open Book by Orson Scott Card
Please visit https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/1/audiobook/703573 to listen full audiobooks. Title: An Open Book Author: Orson Scott Card Narrator: Orson Scott Card Format: Unabridged Audiobook Length: 2 hours 8 minutes Release date: October 31, 2023 Genres: Poetry Publisher's Summary: The first collection of poems by one of the world’s best-loved writers. Orson Scott Card, the author of Ender’s Game, Enchantment, and the Alvin Maker series, did not originally plan to write fiction. He spent his journeyman years as a playwright. Before that, however, it was poetry that engaged his pen. Never content to write just one thing, Card has continued writing poetry along with his more well-known work in other forms. He has submitted little of it for publication, because there are no journals that seem to welcome the kind of poetry he values. An Open Book, Card’s first published collection, is selected from thirty-five years of poems. The title reflects his attitude that this book and all the poems in it remain works in progress. It also reflects Card’s commitment to clarity, especially in poetry. As he says in his afterword: “To be clear and yet also say something worth saying is what I believe poets should strive for. “The first reading should reward the reader. If later readings reveal new insights, so much the better; but if the first reading did not achieve Dryden’s recipe of sweetness and light, why should a reader return for a second pass?” Being an open book, this audiobook edition also features poems not included in the original print edition.

Troilus and Cressida by Geoffrey Chaucer
Please visit https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/1/audiobook/731084 to listen full audiobooks. Title: Troilus and Cressida Author: Geoffrey Chaucer Narrator: Jonathan Keeble Format: Unabridged Audiobook Length: 7 hours 43 minutes Release date: December 7, 2018 Genres: Poetry Publisher's Summary: Considered one of Chaucer's finest poems, second only to The Canterbury Tales in richness and depth, Troilus and Cressida is a tragic love story set against the background of the siege of Troy by the Greeks. Written in the 1380s, it presents Troilus, son of Priam and younger brother of Hector, as a Trojan warrior of renown who sees, and falls deeply in love with, the beautiful Cressida. Cressida is the daughter of Calchas, a Trojan priest and seer who, having divined the eventual fall of Troy, has deserted to Agamemnon's camp, leaving his daughter in the besieged city. With the help of Pander, friend to Troilus and uncle to Cressida, the young couple meet and merge - but with unhappy consequences. Chaucer's long poem is cast in seven-line rhymed stanzas and is eased out of Middle English to be presented here in a lively modern verse translation by George Philip Krapp, who has retained not only the structure but its spirit. Emotions run high, the love is intense, the story unfolds with a dramatic urgency that draws the listener ever onwards; yet Chaucer is Chaucer, and there are times when a deft line, a light insinuation, suggests the smile, the benevolence and the immediacy of the author of The Canterbury Tales. Troilus and Cressida, though often overshadowed by the Tales and time (and even Shakespeare, who took up the story) is a monument in its own right in the canon of English literature. Once listened to it will never be forgotten.
