Abstract Essay in its Fifth season, featuring Mike Montague Founder and CEO of Avenue 9 as my guest.

Mike Montague

Human-First AI Marketing® @Avenue9 👨‍🦲✨ Founder, Podcaster, & Author

What if your audience could finally understand how to really use AI in marketing to grow their business without sounding like a robot or spamming everyone they know?

I help business leaders, marketers, and entrepreneurs cut through the hype and get real about what it takes to market like a big brand without blowing their budget or burning bridges with their clients and employees.

As the founder of Avenue9, I teach Human-First AI Marketing®, a practical, people-centered approach that blends smart AI tools with smarter marketing strategy.

I’ve built over 200 websites, authored LinkedIn The Sandler Way, and trained thousands of professionals during my 15 years as a Sandler sales trainer. My How To Succeed podcast has over 3.7 million downloads, and I’ve shared stages at Google, Amazon, HubSpot, Vistage, ATD, and even with Billy Idol and Frankie Valli. I've helped everyone from founder-led startups to giants like Uber, Bud Light, Express, Coca-Cola, Amazon, and the Kansas City Chiefs to build trust, not just traffic.

I don’t just talk about trends and AI hype (although I am happy to nerd-out if you want). I prefer to give your audience actionable marketing strategies, great stories, and a few laughs. I am a former radio DJ and game show host! Ask me about how I got fired live on-stage by Billy Idol...

I’ll show them how to:

- Use AI to amplify their unique voice—not replace it

- Market with authenticity at scale with automation

- Avoid the “AI slop” and stand out with strategic restraint

- Build trust through storytelling, context, and human-first communication

I bring a fresh, contrarian take to AI, sales, and marketing that resonates with entrepreneurs, CMOs, and curious skeptics alike.

Abstract Essay
Abstract Essay in its Fifth season, featuring Joe Casalese Founder/CEO of RoofBids as my guest.

Joe Casalese

Founder/CEO of RoofBids. Shaking up the roof industry for the good of the world!

Getting a business started is super easy. Starting a business is not. Taking the steps to incorporate, set up bank accounts, credit cards, etc is easy because their are processes to follow and checklists everywhere to find out what to do. BUT starting that business as a business that will succeed is crazy hard and it's not for everyone. "They" say to follow the script to make a successful business, but the world is not that easy, not that kind, and not that welcoming to new things. Failing is the best thing that has happened to me. We need to fail and fail and fail until we start to see the small things that make the bigger things successful. Slowing down, reading the signs, making informed decisions, but also trying something that will fail and teach you something is as much or more important.

My first venture was going to be a cool space for guys inside of a mall. I didn't get it off the ground and within 5 years malls all around the country were closing down. My wife and I started a small children's boutique online. We found a brick and mortar location, but before we signed in 2008, the stock market crashed. Another business I started depended upon a partnership that never produced what they said they would, and it made me fail. I ended up selling roofs just to earn a few dollars. I felt like I would never succeed in business, but that roof sales job led to RoofBids and I couldn't be more thankful! RoofBids led to starting our nonprofit, Covered by Christ (which is harder than a for-profit business) and I couldn't be happier!

Sean Cononie

I was feeding the homeless at a very young age just out of high school. I n 1997 I found this guy John McCormick a homeless man who needed help. I asked him to come with me and I took him to a hospital. We were not a shelter at the time. When I gave him housing the hospitals found out and they started to send me all their homeless. We became a shelter basically overnight without one ounce of planning. We became the biggest provider in the county. Years later the city sued us but we won the case to stay where we were. I also operate the Mass Shooting Prevention Center Crisis hotline trying to help potential shooters get the help they need.

Abstract Essay in its Fifth season, featuring Gloria Vanderhorst as my guest.

Gloria Vanderhorst

Psychologist, Writer, Advisor and Mentor

I started my practice as a psychologist working with preschool children, mainly boys, as the female teachers saw them as problematic with their exuberance and physical energy and labeled them as hyperactive or attention-deficient.

My work resulted in their fathers coming to therapy to explore their emotional angst. I was privileged to see how our culture robs males of access to the full range of emotions necessary for a healthy sense of self and healthy relationships with others.

As I continued to work with men and help them to access feelings that have been blocked from early childhood, I began to write about their stories and examine how our culture has systematically limited the emotional development of males. I am writing a book about the developmental dangers of being a male in this culture and how fathers can help their sons avoid the trap of the emotional desert.

My therapy work focuses on helping men develop broader, healthier relationships with their spouses and families. Many of the blogs I write weekly are designed to help men and women better understand their emotional selves and the dynamics of relationships.

Abstract Essay
Abstract Essay in its Fifth season, featuring Arnold Beekes as my guest.

Arnold Beekes

The Brain Fitness Trainer

Arnold enables people to move from ‘Fitting In’ to Flying Out’.

Here he shares that he grew up in an environment of extreme ‘Fitting In’.

Conformity was an integral part of my upbringing. My father was a military officer, both in his work and at home.

Still, I was very different from my fellow students at primary school. I was complying with my father’s norms and not with those of my friends or school. I was different in the sense that I always had a short haircut (remember: military coup) and was not allowed to wear jeans. This was hard, especially in the sixties. Also, I wanted to play football, but that was not allowed, I had to play (field) hockey. If I complied in every area of my life (school, gardening, polishing shoes, sports etc.), he would not be angry, then it was sort of okay.

In high school the focus was on knowledge tests and totally not on discovering and developing talents and strengths. And – even more important- there was no attention for who I am and how to live life. Like most young people I had no clue what career and corresponding education to choose. At the university, the approach was basically the same; the focus was mainly on memorizing knowledge. I was still a cog in the learning machine.

Then I had to do military service, no need to further explain what that meant for fitting in.

In my work, both in a small company and in multinationals, there was a strong push to comply with corporate culture. Although it was my job to innovate, there was still this strong centrifugal force.

This means that from a very young age, I was conditioned to meet the expectations of others (parents, teachers, professors, or bosses). I was conditioned to live someone else’s life.

To fit in is the holy grail of our society. It is very likely that you also are expected to fit in.

Abstract Essay
Abstract Essay in its Fifth season, featuring Jodi Vandenberg-Daves as my guest.

Modern Motherhood: An American History

How did mothers transform from parents of secondary importance in the colonies to having their multiple and complex roles connected to the well-being of the nation? In the first comprehensive history of motherhood in the United States, Jodi Vandenberg-Daves explores how tensions over the maternal role have been part and parcel of the development of American society.

Modern Motherhood travels through redefinitions of motherhood over time, as mothers encountered a growing cadre of medical and psychological experts, increased their labor force participation, gained the right to vote, agitated for more resources to perform their maternal duties, and demonstrated their vast resourcefulness in providing for and nurturing their families. Navigating rigid gender role prescriptions and a crescendo of mother-blame by the middle of the twentieth century, mothers continued to innovate new ways to combine labor force participation and domestic responsibilities. By the 1960s, they were poised to challenge male expertise, in areas ranging from welfare and abortion rights to childbirth practices and the confinement of women to maternal roles. In the twenty-first century, Americans continue to struggle with maternal contradictions, as we pit an idealized role for mothers in children's development against the social and economic realities of privatized caregiving, a paltry public policy structure, and mothers' extensive employment outside the home.

Building on decades of scholarship and spanning a wide range of topics, Vandenberg-Daves tells an inclusive tale of African American, Native American, Asian American, working class, rural, and other hitherto ignored families, exploring sources ranging from sermons, medical advice, diaries and letters to the speeches of impassioned maternal activists. Chapter topics include: inventing a new role for mothers; contradictions of moral motherhood; medicalizing the maternal body; science, expertise, and advice to mothers; uplifting and controlling mothers; modern reproduction; mothers' resilience and adaptation; the middle-class wife and mother; mother power and mother angst; and mothers' changing lives and continuous caregiving. While the discussion has been part of all eras of American history, the discussion of the meaning of modern motherhood is far from over.

Abstract Essay in its Fifth season, featuring John Dedakis award-winning author as my guest.

John Dedakis

From Journalist to Novelist (Or How I Learned to Start Making it UP)

Personal experience is the grist of fiction. Budding novelists are taught to "write what you know." In my case, I know journalism, and I know grief and loss.

During my 45 years in journalism (25 at CNN), I've interviewed presidents (Reagan and Carter), famous people (Alfred Hitchcock), covered the White House, and have been tear-gassed covering a riot.

In my personal life, I've lost my sister to suicide and my youngest son to a heroin overdose.

All of those experiences are baked into the six political thrillers I've written. Journalism and grief are backdrops and themes that make up the life of my protagonist, Lark Chadwick, a strong-willed and strong-minded twenty-something young woman.

My first traditionally published novel came out 20 years ago. It took me 10 years to find my agent. During that time, the novel went through 14 major revisions, and my agent is the 39th agent I queried. That learning experience led to a second career as a manuscript editor and one-on-one writing coach.

I'm also a keynote speaker and workshop leader. I inspire people who are struggling with grief to use writing as a way to heal.

Publish Like the Pros: 1106 Design makes it easy for authors to release a top-quality book, keep control of it, and earn more money when they sell it—without a publisher! We also help businesses with shorter lead magnet books.

Self-publishing means the AUTHOR is the publisher, but you'd never know that from browsing the internet. Most authors believe a publisher is necessary, that they must sign away their rights, creative control, and revenues to offer their books to the public. This is not the case!

1106 Design's mission is to help authors publish books without sharing a penny of their net revenue from sales with a publisher. We provide self-publishing peace with quality editorial and design services, reliable publishing advice, and the convenience of project management at every stage. Since 2001, we have helped more than 4,000 authors Publish Like the Pros.

If you or your listeners think earning $5–$7 on every book sale is better than earning $1-$3 typically paid by "publishers," we welcome a conversation.

Men's Action Life Coach

In my life, I lived without direction for many years. I thought I was on the right track, but still felt depressed and lacked pride in myself. Deep down, I knew I was not pushing myself and living on purpose. Through the help of someone very important to me, I was able to connect to what it means to live fully, push myself, go for everything and give everything to my life. Since then, I have been able to live with joy and purpose, I am engaged and enrolled in my own life, I am the hero of my own story. I would like to teach other men to do the same because there are a lot of men in the US today who are living without a rudder and do not know how to be men or productive people in this society.
