Car Design and Car Culture From 1900 Through The 1950s

Tim and Kyle discuss automotive design from the era of the horseless carriage to the era of tail fins. This episode covers key design trends and history in the decades from 1900 to 1959. From the early days when carriage builders made the switch to car bodies, automotive design evolved from a side concern subordinate to engineering into a key factor in all model launches. All of this occurred amid changing technology, culture, and the centrality of automobiles in American life. While we go on a few tech-related tangents, this remains a deep dive into the first half-century of automotive styling.

Buying Classic Cars – Different Eras, Problems, and Tech!

Tim and Kyle talk about buying cool/collectible cars from the classic (pre-1980), RADwood (1980-1999), and modern eras. Cars built prior to 1980 are a different world, and their unique age, technology, and histories mean even two examples of the same model can be vastly different. Kyle recounts bad experiences from buying a rolling wreck of a 1950s Jaguar, and Tim recalls the pitfalls of letting a 13 year-old trailer an old Volkswagen Beetle back to the house. Corrosion, originality, access to parts and knowledge, and robust pre-purchase inspections are key factors to ensure success. “RADwood” cars of the 80s and 90s offer the conveniences of modern systems and performance, but the huge range of dead-end engine electronics, early two-stage paint treatments, abundance of perishable plastic trim, and aging computers demand a careful inspection and model-specific research to match. We end with modern cars, which are easy to buy! Go factory certified pre-owned, get an AAA extended warranty, or score a late model still under factory warranty.

Episode 07 - Cars Too Far Ahead of Their Time + 2000s Classic Cars Part 1

Episode 06 – Cars We’ve Owned, Cars We Regret, and Cars We’ll Buy

Tim and Kyle share war stories about their best and worst previous car ownership experiences. Tim recalls spending way too much money chasing problems on 2003 Audi S8s and regretting his sale of a Nogaro Blue 2013 Audi TTRS. Kyle recalls the miraculous sale and repurchase of his 1948 Ford Tudor coupe and explains the Saab 900 convertible origins of his famous YouTube handle, “Saabkyle04.” Tim opines that he hasn’t burned enough money chasing problems on complex cars and resolves to buy a 1995 Mitsubishi 3000 GT VR-4 Spyder and the (son-of-Fisker) Karma GS-6. Have you ever gotten in over your head with cool/weird/old cars? This episode is for you!

Episode 05 - Our Ferrari Purosangue Opinions, Favorite Birth-Year Cars, And Our Quest To Define “Classic” Cars

Ferrari just launched its first SUV; Tim and Kyle have strong opinions about this $400,000 “truck.” Our hosts further discuss the 2022 Detroit Auto Show launches including the seventh generation Ford Mustang and the final edition Chrysler 300C with SRT Hemi power. What is a classic car? What is an antique car? Tim and Kyle investigate with input from classic car insurance companies, Autotrader, and our own experience burning countless dollars on old cars. The team also tackles “birth year” cars and our favorites from Kyle (1989) and Tim (1984). Our only rule is that the car must have been available for sale as a new automobile during those birth years; Buick’s Reatta, Audi’s Sport Quattro, and the Cadillac Eldorado Convertible feature prominently!
