Terwijl ze probeert de hond te kalmeren, vreest ze dat de dagen met haar man Jevgeni ook geteld zullen zijn als Laika sterft. Bovendien plant het lot van de hond een zaadje van verzet tegen het regime van Chroetsjov. Hoe kan het dat Laika zoveel voor haar is gaan betekenen?
