UN melaporkan bahwa 16% dari populasi global atau sebanyak 1,2 milyar penduduk adalah anak muda usia 15-24 tahun. Di mana, sebaran anak muda tertinggi berada di wilayah Asia Tengah dan Selatan.
Sayangnya, bertolak belakang dengan persentasi anak muda yang tinggi, anak muda memiliki kuasa yang terbatas hingga saat ini. Pekerja muda diperlakukan secara tidak adil oleh perusahaan. Kebutuhan mereka tidak terefleksi di dalam kebijakan dan suara mereka dipandang tidak penting atau diapresiasi.
Hal ini terjadi karena persepsi negatif dan budaya tentang anak muda yang ada di masyarakat. Anak muda dianggap tidak berpengalaman, kurang mandiri, kurang teratur, dan sebagainya.
Namun, apakah itu benar?
Saat ini banyak pengusaha dan CEO muda yang memiliki pengaruh di bidangnya masing-masing. Anak muda banyak berpartisipasi mengajak gerakan sosial untuk menciptakan lingkungan yang lebih baik. Ini adalah bukti bahwa anak muda memiliki kekuatan, kreatifitas, tak mudah takut, dan penuh semangat.
Untuk mencapai hal tersebut, kita membutuhkan partisipasi anak muda yang berarati (meaningful youth participation).
