Paul McCartney, The Phantom Band and Cocteau Twins, with Jude Rogers and Eamonn Forde

Jim Irvin's guests in this episode are esteemed writers about the power of music and the power behind it. Jude Rogers has been an editor and writer at large for many publications. Her recent Radio 4 series, A Life In Music traced the way music interacts with, and supports, us at various times in our lives. Her book expanding on this premise, The Sound Of Being Human : How Music Shapes Our Lives, is due in the spring of 2022. Eamonn Forde has written extensively about the music business. His most recent book, Leaving The Building, studies the burgeoning profitability of artists' estates and the subtle business of marketing an act after they're gone.

The albums in this episode are: Give My Regards To Broad Street by Paul McCartney (1984), Checkmate Savage by The Phantom Band (2009) and Four Calendar Cafe by Cocteau Twins (1993)

Also discussed: Growing up unmusical, what gives with the Mercury Prize, do songs need words we can understand and whatever happened to R.E.M.'s status?
