How Do I Disagree With The People I Love?

How Do I Disagree With The People I Love?

Rachel & Tanvi sit down with Pranav Sawhney - someone who has been equal parts people pleaser and people agitator, sometimes to the detriment of his relationships and sometimes to their benefit.

As we grow older - and start growing up away from the influence and safety nets of our parents, families and ‘sibling friends’ - two things are inevitable: the ability to choose family and friends based on your newfound agency, and disagreements with your family and friends of origin. These can be about pretty much everything imaginable, from money, to politics, religion, partners, careers, having kids, not having kids … what did we miss?

As the disagreements grow stronger, wider and sometimes louder, we ask the fundamental questions:

  • What happens when we disagree on values with people that taught us our values?
  • How might we separate values from ideologies?
  • Once we have the mutual respect and vocabulary to do so amicably, without the risk of permanent damage, what does resolution or repair look like?
  • What about those disagreements that never really leave but instead settle in the back of our minds waiting for their next surprise appearance? Is writing them off with a ‘they just don’t know any better’ actually any better?
