Does Choosing to Have Kids Change Who I Am?

Rachel & Tanvi sit down with Aprajita Pandey - Founder and CEO of Indian nonprofit, Haiyya - to dive into her experience of becoming a mother.

When Aprajita’s son was born, Tanvi was struck by her new email signature: "I am now an early toddler's mamma trying to work around my little human's temper, tantrums and demands. Please embrace and bear with my odd timed emails, typos, conservative meeting slots availability and short line responses. I request you to engage with my emails in your own work hours and boundaries."

By leaning fully into her new identity as a mother, and rallying community around her, Aprajita gracefully navigates the ‘have it all-ish’ dream. Together, they talk about:

  • When was the first time you felt a maternal instinct?
  • When did you know you were personally ready to become a mother? When did you know your relationship was ready?
  • What was it like being pregnant and preparing for this next phase of life?
  • What was it like when you actually had the child and parenting was no longer theoretical but very very real?
