A Scholar EmCee.
In Episode 15, we welcome Bavu Blakes.
A writer, journalist, MC, teacher, and student. Bavu Blakes has lived his life immersed in word, knowledge, and of course HIP HOP.
Born in '74, named by his parents as a counter-narrative, Bavu was delivered into this world a positive force.
We get into Bavu's "origin story", coming up in Texas, and how he navigated a life driven by writing while pivoting between education, journalism, and hip hop.
We discuss the social definition of being black in America, culture-shock, and discovering new identities.
We also get to talk about the new book EL's MIRROR written by Bavu, and his son.
Thank you so much for listening, and we are beyond happy to share this episode with you.
"I am definitely going to write, go to lots of schools, follow my 'gps', rap in stupors, publicize track and field, drop out of college, elope, insert history, catch a case, tell some lies, disappear on 6th street, start a family, finish grad school, secretly plan a podcast, debut a picture book, and trade the world. At least. For the nobody who knows."
