He has not just explained, he also wrote how you can systematically follow the path of Yoga and start to control your mind then use all its potential. If you are interested to go and achieve higher stages of mind, he has also explained what sadhana needed.

Yoga Sutra of Patanjali #5-6

5 kinds of Mind

Vyasa’s commentary on yoga sutra 1-1, he said, yoga is Samadhi (contemplation). Samadhi is a key characteristic of Chitta which pervades in all 5 states of mind at any given time. Vyasa called 5 kinds as 5 Bhumi of Chitta in his commentary.

  1. Kshipta – Chaotic or most fickle state of mind
  2. Mudha – Dull or Lazy state of mind
  3. Vikshipta – Partially focused mind
  4. Ekagra – One-pointed mind
  5. Niruddha – Fully absorbed mind

वृत्तयः पञ्चतय्यः क्लिष्टाऽक्लिष्टाश्चः॥५॥

Vṛttayaḥ pañcatayyaḥ kliṣṭāakliṣṭāśca

The thought-streams are five-fold, painful / with anguish and not painful or without anguish.

प्रमाणविपर्ययविकल्पनिद्रास्मृतयः॥६॥

Pramāṇaviparyayavikalpanidrāsmṛtayaḥ

Right knowledge, wrong knowledge, Illusionary or Imaginary knowledge, sleep and memory.
