Our guest today is Rejza Turner, a visiting graduate student passionate about Yiddish language pedagogy and the curation and translation of little-known Yiddish texts. She has found new inspiration in the energetic and learned community of Yiddish scholars in Poland.
Some of the questions we asked Rejza: What brought you to Poland, and, more specifically, to Wrocław? Who have you worked with here and how do you feel they have influenced your work as a translator from Yiddish? Does being in Poland make you a better translator?
Your host is Barbara Pendzich, a lecturer at the Taube Department on the history of Jews in medieval and early modern Poland. She also helps out in the Department’s administrative office.
Rejza Turner’s scholarly research focuses on the role of the American Yiddish press as a semi-private space for “internal” conversation among Eastern European Jewish immigrants at the turn of the last century. Rejza's academic home base is the Department of History at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
