NWA tröttnade på att WWF blockerade deras pay-per-views med egna wrestlingshower (Survivor Series gick upp mot Starrcade i november 1987 och Royal Rumble mot Bunkhouse Stampede i januari 1988). För att hämnas skapade NWA Clash of the Champions och anordnade detta gratis på kabel-TV samma dag som WWF körde WrestleMania IV på pay-per-view.
