Emma Cook-Clarke is fresh off of a second place finish at the Speedgoat 50k, "the hardest 50k in the U.S.", where the full women's podium ran under the previous course record. Although she's no stranger to the mountains, this was Emma's first 50k race!
In this episode, Lauren and Emma discuss her fascinating background growing up in the Canadian Rockies, traveling abroad as a young adult and discovering her purpose, her 10-year career as a firefighter, and ultimately leaving that career with support from Arc'teryx to pursue a full time athletic career that balances both performance and community interest.
Emma has competed on a world class level in Spartan racing, Sky Running, trail and mountain running, and is a 2026 Olympic prospect in Skimo. We discuss her experiences at Speedgoat 50k including doubts and uncertainty before the start, and how she stayed open to letting the race evolve through curiosity.
