Better World Technologist: Sue Braiden

Welcome to the St. Clair College Women in STEM speaker series Podcast, brought to you by the Genesis Entrepreneurship Centre, located in Windsor, Ontario, Canada.

This episode features Sue Braiden, an award-winning technologist, solutions journalist, keynote speaker, activist and better world scout. Academically, she ranked in the top ten in Ontario for her writing and has won numerous awards, but it was her choice to champion technology for community capacity-building that has defined her as a changemaker for more than 35 years.

She has spent three decades building an IT career that established her as a leading technology voice in Canada. Her leadership roles have included Computer Columnist with CBC Radio for a decade, as well as directing large scale technical implementations for Fortune 500 companies and global brands such as Bayer Healthcare, International Institute of Innovation, United way, Canadian Mental Health Association, Peter F. Drucker Canadian Foundation, Texas A&M University, Robarts School for the Deaf & UNESCO.

Sue taught one of the very first MBA PC-based computer courses at the University of Western Ontario’s National Centre for Management Research and Development (NCMRD, renamed the “Lawrence National Centre for Policy and Management” in 2002). She was also a guest lecturer guiding similar studies at Carleton University in Ottawa and helped shape some of the first distance learning programs at various post-secondary schools in Canada and the U.S.

Sue shares her journey of what attracted her to the technology space, what being a “Better World Technologist” really means, some of the top experiences she’s had over the years in her career, and much more. We also finish off with some fun rapid-fire questions!

Tune in to hear more about Sue’s story including:

  • How we can get more women involved as programmers, designers, and in cyber-security
  • What she wishes she could have done differently in the past & advice she would give her 19-year-old self
  • Finding peace outside of work and how this didn’t always come easy to her
  • The most powerful mentors she’s had by accident, due to mentorship by proximity & the dark side of mentorship
  • The importance of enforcing boundaries, especially with your leaders

Don’t forget to subscribe to the podcast so you never miss a new episode!
