Three Big Things - 11/5
1. This government shutdown is now the longest in U.S. history. Today marks Day 36 of the shutdown. That surpasses the government closure during President Trump's first term and takes the title. At a breakfast for Republican lawmakers in Washington this morning President Trump urged Republicans to end the filibuster and re-open the federal government. He said if they don't “they'll never get anything done”. After the President's comments, Senate Majority Leader John Thune re-iterated his view that there are not the necessary votes among Republicans to change the rules. 2. The lingering Government Shutdown could influence airspace. This is not a physical closure of airspace, but a management-based reduction in how much airspace is actively used to prevent accidents and the potential chaos that Duffy describes. The reduction is a direct result of a rise in controller absences and can cause widespread flight delays and cancellations. Air traffic control is consistently regarded as one of the most stressful jobs due to high-stakes decisions, constant concentration, and pressure from split-second demands, which can lead to anxiety and burnout, then throw in a shrinking population of workers, extended hours and the stress of not being paid. 3. A new survey shows household debt in America has reached a new record high.
