1. A team from the National Transportation Safety Board is heading to Kentucky right now to investigate the deadly plane crash in Louisville. They call it the "go-team." It's full of technical experts who will analyze the scene, investigate the evidence, and conduct interviews. They'll also spend time outside of the crash scene itself, gathering flight logs and maintenance records. The UPS cargo plane crashed yesterday... shortly after taking off from Louisville airport. The death toll is now up to nine and that number is likely to go up by at least one yet. Three crew members were on board the plane. Others were killed on the ground. Firefighters spent the night battling the massive fire that erupted in the aftermath of the crash. Today, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear said the crash also destroyed two businesses but had the potential to be far worse considering the location. Today, Beshear declared a "state of emergency" to provide additional assistance to the scene. He's also establishing an emergency relief fund to help the victims. Money will go to funerals first. Then response, recovery, and rebuilding. 2. The Costco proposal just took a major step forward in Franklin. The City’s Common Council gave its final approvals for the project on the northwest corner of Drexel Avenue and 27th Street. Costco is looking to get through the permit process and close in March of next year and kick off construction late spring, early summer.

Three Big Things - 11/5
1. This government shutdown is now the longest in U.S. history. Today marks Day 36 of the shutdown. That surpasses the government closure during President Trump's first term and takes the title. At a breakfast for Republican lawmakers in Washington this morning President Trump urged Republicans to end the filibuster and re-open the federal government. He said if they don't “they'll never get anything done”. After the President's comments, Senate Majority Leader John Thune re-iterated his view that there are not the necessary votes among Republicans to change the rules. 2. The lingering Government Shutdown could influence airspace. This is not a physical closure of airspace, but a management-based reduction in how much airspace is actively used to prevent accidents and the potential chaos that Duffy describes. The reduction is a direct result of a rise in controller absences and can cause widespread flight delays and cancellations. Air traffic control is consistently regarded as one of the most stressful jobs due to high-stakes decisions, constant concentration, and pressure from split-second demands, which can lead to anxiety and burnout, then throw in a shrinking population of workers, extended hours and the stress of not being paid. 3. A new survey shows household debt in America has reached a new record high.

CBS News Justice Correspondent Scott MacFarlane talks about how Democrats swept a trio of races in the first major elections since Donald Trump won the Presidential election, what are the key takeaways from these results? Who is "The Sandwich Guy" and why is he in court? The Supreme Court will hear arguments today about whether Trump exceeded his authority by using emergency powers to levy tariffs on more than 100 countries and nearly every U.S. trading partner, what could tilt their decision in favor of Trump? Will the outcome of the case redefine the boundaries of presidential authority? As for the federal shutdown, Wisconsin representative Bryan Steil has introduced the "Withhold Members Pay Shutdown's Act". Why has Steil requested that his pay be withheld during the current federal government shutdown and is urging other members of Congress to do the same?

The Franklin Common Council says "yes" to the giant retailers who wish for a 120,000 square foot retail store and 12-pump gas station. A few things need to happen before Costco files for building permits allowing for construction. That includes signing off on a conditional use permit to allow for a gas station, amendment of a zoning plan, and a landscaping plan. It's an aggressive timeline. Stephen Cross is a real estate development director for Costco. He says detailed building drawings are currently being created and the goal is to begin construction late spring, early summer of 2026. Costco Ranks third in total U.S. retail sales, behind only Walmart and Amazon, with approximately $245 billion in sales.

1. Today is the 35th day of the government shutdown. That means this shutdown is now tied as the longest in American history. It ties the shutdown during President Trump's first term. That one ended on Day 35. It's likely this one will surpass that and take the title. On this Day 35, air transportation is edging towards chaos with Thanksgiving looming. People whose SNAP food assistance didn’t come are crowding food banks. 700-thousand people here in Wisconsin rely on those benefits, known as FoodShare in our state. 2. Husar’s House of Fine Diamonds will soon be closing its doors for good after 75 years. Siblings and Owners Mike and Mary Husar are retiring from the family-owned jewelry shop started in 1951 as a watch shop by their father Marvin. The Husar’s say they don't have a final date for when their store on Main Street will close, but they plan to keep running until they run out of inventory.

1. No food assistance benefits will be paid out until the government shutdown ends. President Trump just posted that on social media today. The president's message comes one day after the Trump administration said it would at least provide partial aid. Now the push for the benefits is headed back before a federal judge. 700-thousand people here in Wisconsin rely on those benefits, known as FoodShare in our state. 2. A warning that mankind is on an accelerating course to climate catastrophe. Current emissions trajectories look set to warm the world by as much as 2.8°C (5.04°F) above preindustrial levels by 2100. This follows the 2015 Paris Agreement that established a long-term temperature goal among 195 parties to keep the rise in global surface temperature to well below 2 °C (3.6 °F) above pre-industrial levels. The U.S. has had a checkered past with the agreement, withdrawing at the start of the first Trump administration, rejoining at the start of the Biden administration, then withdrawing again at the start of the second Trump administration. 3. There's a high fire danger in parts of Wisconsin today. That includes all southeastern Wisconsin from Ozaukee County down to the state border. The problem is two-fold: Gusty winds and dry vegetation. The Milwaukee Fire Department is very concerned about the high fire danger and the possibility of wildfires. Uncontrolled fires during these conditions can burn for a long time, smolder underground for days, and be challenging to put out. The Milwaukee Fire Department says to avoid outdoor burning until conditions improve. And smokers, get rid of your cigarette butts appropriately. Cigarette butts tossed out a car window or tossed onto a sidewalk are one of the most common causes of grass fires, especially those starting near major roads. We've seen the damage wildfires have done across the country so let's make sure that doesn't happen here in Wisconsin.
