Nikki speaks to Alex Alleyne, Founder of Growth IQ and Strategic Sales Lead at Twilio on life as an entrepreneur and working the 9-to-5 at the same time.
Alex tells his story of growing up in Croydon from a single parent family and working in McDonalds, but even from a young age he knew he wanted more.
When he was offered the chance to study law, he turned it down in favour of better and now owns his own business, has worked his way up at Twilio - a San Francisco software company and was placed third as one of LinkedIn’s Top Voices featured Richard Branson and James Caan.
Alex’s story is one of resilience and dedication - demonstrating your past does not dictate your future.
1) The importance of having purpose: “I think one of the things I spend time on is actually coming to a point in your life where you realise you need to live a purposeful life. So it's actually understanding what direction I want to take in my life and ultimately committing yourself to that.”
2) Diversity and Inclusion being more than gender or colour: “You think D&I [Diversity and Inclusion] and you think gender or you think under-represented groups or people of colour, and the reality is when we talk about diversity and inclusion, we're talking about everyone, if you're an introvert vs. an extrovert or you have a different personality type to someone else, that in itself, all forms a part of that conversation.”
3) Going the extra mile for success: “I say you can't do what everyone else is doing and expect to deliver a different result. You know, you've got to be able to push boundaries.”
