Well now, welcome, neighbor, to Winds on W Mountain, where tales as old as these hills—and twice as twisted—whisper their way to you, when the mood strikes and the wind's right. We ain't much for schedules; episodes waft in like smoke from a Shatagee Woods Adirondack Mountain campfire, carrying yarns spun by old-timers, tall tales shared by summer folk clutchin' their city ways, and the kind of uncanny musin's that make web-gawkers wonder if we’re history or hysteria. So, pull up a log, pour some milled cider, and let’s see if these winds are breathin' truth or just ghostin’ us all.

Wolf Pond Chronicles: The Bog Fiend of Standish

📻 The Wolf Pond Chronicles: “The Bog Fiend of Standish” 🌲🕯️

Friends an’ neighbors, pull up close and mind yer boots, for we’ve got a fresh-smoked earful straight out of the cattails—Harlan Throop himself broadcasting live from that Crompville muck, where the old ironworks coughed their last and the water still sulks about it; this week’s sonic yarn follows Clary Vigneault—the last bog trapper worth the name—and Ducey Nibbs, a river pirate with more neck than sense, as they take soundings of a sloshin’ thing with too many eyes and a taste for moonshine, and I ain’t one to gild the lily, but when the phonograph horn talks back in a man’s own voice, you’ll want a hand on the lantern and the other on your nerve. 👂⚙️

You’ll hear the black pools hiss, the cattails clap like drunks after payday, the magnet needle wander as if north moved to Lyon Mountain for the summer; there’s field recordings raw as a rasp, iron-country atmospherics, and that Throop fella’s electroacoustic contraptions stitched to Abenaki mud-devil talk so tight you can near see the wings in the steam—this is Winds of W Mountain the way the woods tell it: slow, wet, and certain as rust. 🧭🐟🦇

⚠️ Listener Advisory: sudden howls, wet squelch, and tales of pollution, iron tailings, and creature business not fit for the very young, skittish pets, or folks with a tender ticker. Best with headphones and the lights set low; don’t operate boats, augers, or family tempers while listening.

Tune in wherever respectable podcasts roost—search Steamboat Dispatch: Winds of W Mountain — The Wolf Pond Chronicles: “The Bog Fiend of Standish”—then pass it along downriver to anyone who’s ever heard the swamp sing in four voices. If your keg goes missing after, don’t look at us; we warned you. 🔦🛶

— Filed under: Chateaugay Lake lore, Standish bog history, Abenaki folklore, Lyon Mountain iron, magnetic anomalies, electroacoustic field report.
