The Basics Of Communities

In conversation with my friend Grace from Jakarta Indonesia.

Thank you for taking the time to listen or watch - I hope this added value to your world and got an idea or tip for your own journey.

Please feel free to share with me your thoughts @HannahTruscott on social media and use this hashtag -  #whenfriendscomeover

01.05 - What does community mean to you?

  • It has helped navigate through so many transitional seasons

01.44 - Do you remember the first community you were a part of?

  • I had such a need for a community and journeying with people
  • Having a place that empathised with me helped me grow even further to my goals
  • A lot of big life transitions I had to navigate alone
  • Out of the growing pains I knew I had to start my own community

05.18 - What make a community be attractive to be a part of?

  • Belonging, where you don’t have to perform
  • Showing genuine interest in each member
  • Having common values and communicating what they are

07.25 - What makes a community last?

  • Consistency
  • Community happens throughout the week
  • Communities come in seasons

08.56 - Does it not cause the leader burnout if they are leading everything?

  • I was the leader that had to deal with everything, building with the next leaders in mind
  • It cannot be you alone!

10.46 - What advice would you want to give to someone thinking of starting a community?

  • The mission of why is important which usually comes from your own pain points
  • Our life story gives us a clue of what we want to build next
  • Don’t build on your own - find the people who share the same mission

13.20 - The Scenario….What advice would you give to someone who knows they want to leave the community, how would you suggest doing that well?

  • It can feel like leaving a relationship and you want to do it well.
  • Honouring the community and who it was, and the impact they made

15.23 - Can you recognise any signs to leave a community?

  • You’re feeling frustrated and unsettled
  • It could be about moving around within the community not just leaving

16.45 -  What has been a failure you’ve had from growing communities?

  • Doing everything on my own!
  • Dealing with my over perfection of how I want something
  • A strong community delegates and lets people take ownership.

18.19 - Any thoughts on managing being a part of multiple communities well?

  • Don’t lead them all! You need to give out as well as replenish.
  • Leadership health plays a big role in community health.

20.15 - What’s the community we should focus on the most?

  • The structured vs organic communities
  • My family and immediate inner circle, sharing common values
  • Then you have the more external communities that can shift and adapt

22.15 - Encouragement to someone who is struggling to find a community?

  • It can be extremely vulnerable to be a part of one
  • When you don’t see what you like, why not do it yourself - it doesn’t have to be super structured
  • Knowing when to add structure

24.24 - take initiative and go it alone - you have to have a community with yourself.

  • Being true to what you enjoy!
  • There’s no one way of making a community.
  • It takes one person to step out!
  • Sometimes you just need to try even if it’s not in your comfort zone and being more curious.

Thank you for taking the time to listen or watch - I hope this added value to your world and got an idea or tip for your own journey.
