WHEN DATING HURTS
276. "Marie" - Was Her Sister Bound to Become a DV Statistic?
This WHEN DATING HURTS episode comes with trigger warnings about descriptions of drugs and horrible violence in relationships. If this story becomes too uncomfortable for you, perhaps turn it off and direct your full attention someplace safe for you. Marie and her siblings grew up in a family with two parents whose actions underscore they probably never wanted to be parents. They lived in a dangerous neighborhood in New Jersey where falling in with the wrong crowd was practically a guarantee. Marie's sister was an attractive blonde who had great difficulty in school starting in the fifth grade due to relentless "mean-girls-style" bullying. So, she stopped attending school completely. In fact, Marie's sister did not attend the remainder of elementary school or high school. That left her with too much time, and she fell in with the worst characters in the neighborhood. A crowd that would victimize her continuously with drugs and unwanted sexual encounters. Listening to this WHEN DATING HURTS episode, it will become a temptation to "victim blame" Marie's sister and/or Marie's family. Maybe some of that is deserved. But Marie's sister's spoken and unspoken "cries for help" were never satisfied. She did what she could without support. The takeaway is: without helping our young in their formative years, they might seek "love and attention" in places that can be horribly unhealthy. Sometimes, "fatally" unhealthy. This is Marie's story about her sister, her family, and herself. WHEN DATING HURTS
275. After 3 Years, Host Bill Mitchell Revisits the "What Was That Like" Podcast
Three years ago, I was asked to appear on a huge podcast called, "What Was That Like". The host is Scott Johnson. "WWTL" is a HUGE podcast with many thousands of listeners. It is as successful a podcast as was ever created. In 2022, appearing on WWTL was a great opportunity to boost my listening audience if I did well. Apparently, I was good enough to see my podcast take off in more ways than I expected. In this new WHEN DATING HURTS episode, you will hear my original interview from 2022 followed by an update recorded a couple of months ago (summer of 2025). Both recordings put together give a clear understanding of what my family endured around the time of my daughter's tragedy in 2005. I am proud of these interviews. They bring clarity to what it's like to have a parent's worst nightmare put upon a family. We met our challenge by turning it into a way to warn others. If you have time, be sure to add a review for WHEN DATING HURTS on whatever podcast player you use. Reviews encourage others to listen, and when they do, they learn. WHEN DATING HURTS
270. Natalie - Pt 2 of 2 Pts - "Bad Pickers" Often Pick Horrible Abusers
Some survivors become "bad pickers". It seems like, whoever they start a relationship with turns out to be a bad actor. Maybe an abuser. But, time and time again, no matter how hard they try, bad picker's partners inevitably turn from dream dates to total nightmares. Warning signs are present but not recognized. Or they are ignored. "Bad pickers" can also become "fixers". Fixers try to "fix" their partners. Sometimes they get married or have children while everything around them gets worse. This is a "bad picker story". Our bad picker is Natalie. In part one she picked Mike. In part two, this episode, she picks Joe. WHEN DATING HURTS
268. Savannah - Her Abuser Dominated Her LIfe. Even Post-Marriage.
Savannah was in this relationship for a little less than a year and felt she lost her sense of sanity. She had been in financial and physically abusive relationships before, but this one was different. The psychological abuse was the most devastating thing she had ever encountered. Her abuser isolated her from all her friends – even isolated her from herself, because it got to a point where she couldn't trust her own mind. Savannah tells us her in-depth story. From growing up with her mother and father to meeting Brad the first time. He knew how to work his slow and steady abuse from first glance. Always playing mind games up to and including becoming married to her. No amount of effort would get him to let up. After their break up, his tricks continued post-separation. A"must-listen-to" abuse story. 265. Sean Johnson, Host of the "ControltheFreak" Podcast (London)
Sean Johnson, located in London, England, is the host of the outstanding "ControltheFreak" podcast. What sets him apart from anyone we have ever included on our podcast is: he was an abuser. After years of dominant behavior, which he is not proud about, Sean reinvented himself. His new iteration is a recovered control freak who talks to listeners about the triggers and motivations of dominant and controlling behavior. He knows this subject only too well considering his background. He knows how to spot abuse! Sean wanted to create an episode for his podcast that focuses on one particular "worst-case scenario" story. One where there was dominant behavior present that ended with the victim suffering a life-ending event. Even though he is located in Great Britain, he chose Kristin Mitchell's story. He felt it had all of the details of controlling behavior that he wanted to cover. Thanks to Sean for handling this assignment with a delicate touch. His thorough research into the story and his keen insights make this episode well-worth your time. We asked if we could air Sean's finished podcast episode. It is now available to hear and for you to learn from. WHEN DATING HURTS
267. Bruce Bieber - Lost His Daughter to OIDV (Officer-Involved Domestic Violence)
This episode comes with a long list of warning signs. The graphic descriptions of domestic violence in this survivor story can be triggering to some. There are instances of "adult language", as well. But the scenes depicted needed to be included so listeners can hear what often happens in unhealthy relationships. Please decide carefully whether you should listen to this episode or not. Bruce Bieber's daughter, Abigail Rose Bieber (Abby), was tragically murdered in an officer-involved domestic violence (OIDV) incident on January 29, 2022. She was a Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office deputy and was killed by her intimate partner, Daniel Leyden, who was also a detective in the same office. Leyden then committed suicide.  Bruce Bieber has become an advocate against OIDV, working to raise awareness and push for mandatory policies and accountability nationwide to prevent similar tragedies. He shares his family's story and the systemic failures that allowed his daughter's murder to occur. Leyden had a prior history of domestic violence known to the sheriff's office but not acted upon meaningfully.  There is much to be learned about OIDV but also the warning signs ignored by many involved. One of Leyden's ex-girlfriends, Chynna Ratner, is also included in this WHEN DATING HURTS episode. It is haunting to listen to Chynna tell what she experienced. She is fortunate to be alive. Chynna's story (nd more) can be found on the This Sh*t's Hard Podcast. It features candid, raw, co-hosted conversations with people who "do the hard sh*t". This Sh*t's Hard Podcast gets right down to the biggest challenges of life, business, and everything in between. They have episodes on dating, building and scaling a brand, changing sexual preferences, the business of fashion, travel wellness, exercise, and entertainment television... and so much more. WHEN DATING HURTS
264. Melody and Lizzie - Pt 2 of 2 Pts - Each Was Married to the Same Serial Abuser
This episode comes with content warnings. To be able to accurately describe the level of verbal and physical abuse in this story, it was necessary to include actual accounts that include obscene language, drug usage, and violent acts. The intent of the WHEN DATING HURTS Podcast is never to sensationalize abuse. But there is the need to allow actual survivors to report their stories as they remember them without editing. Abuse is ugly. We want our listeners will learn to be able to detect, avoid, and break free from impending intimate partner violence in any form. This is part two, the final episode in this story. This story is actually two survivor stories in one. Melody and Lizzie are each survivors of Harry, a toxic serial abuser. What makes what you're about to hear so unique is Melody and Lizzie were married to Harry in succession. One after the other. You will see how an abuser can be methodical. In both cases, the attraction to him at first was quite similar – so were the warning signs, the mounting concerns, the emotional and verbal abuse, and the physical abuse. Of course there were similarities – they were married to the same abuser. Harry merely took what worked in one relationship into the next relationship. We will first hear Melody's story. Then we will move to Lizzie's story. See that if they knew and followed the warning signs, they would have missed a lifetime a misery from this one predatory abuser. 262. Kelly Sutliff - Her "Perfect" Husband Nearly Murdered Her
This episode comes with a long list of warning signs. The graphic descriptions of domestic violence in this survivor story can be triggering to some. But the scenes depicted needed to be included so listeners can know what often happens in unhealthy relationships. Please decide carefully whether you should listen to this episode or not. Kelly Sutliff felt she had the perfect husband until the day he nearly killed her. There were warning signs, but she either did not interpret them or she ignored them. Kelly tells us exactly what it was like to be married to this man. We can see how easy it is to be tricked by someone as practiced as her husband, Chris. She will explain, in detail, the day she was nearly murdered by him. Today, as a survivor, Kelly has managed to pick up the pieces of her life and is living a better life than she would ever have imagined. For protection after she broke free from her abusive predator husband, Kelly acquired a protection dog named Stella. This led to her immense appreciation and love for these life-protectors. She now has two additional protection dogs. If that is not enough, Kelly started a non-profit to help both train protection dogs and find those in need of these magnificent dogs. WHEN DATING HURTS
259. Rereleased - Deborah - Pt 2 of 2 - Army Wife Abused by Army Husband
This is a rerelease of a story that was published about one year ago. This is part two of a two-part story. Deborah’s narrative takes us to places many of us have never been before. She spent time in the US Navy and then the US Army. We go to Virginia, California, Kentucky, and even Afghanistan before her return to the US. Before heading into Afghanistan with the US Army, Deborah meets Scott, who does a brilliant portrayal of being everyone’s best buddy while winning over Deborah’s heart. It here where warning signs are on full display but are unfortunately missed. Upon her return from Afghanistan, while in the US Army, Deborah, learns, she is pregnant with her first child. At this point, the relationship takes a major turn for the worse. This story shows how a covert narcissist can take on many disguises and fool many people. But when a narcissist is called out, or is not being obeyed, life can become turbulent and dangerous for the person being targeted. In this story, we see how Scott handles himself when Deborah is not compliant. We also learn how Deborah manages to keep her mind together when she is put to the test time and time again. 257. Cait Alexander - Pt 2 of 2 Pts - Almost Murdered by Her Ex but Case Never Saw Justice
This is part two of a two-part story. We are honored to have Canadian Cait Alexander join us on WHEN DATING HURTS. She will tell us how Canadian court case delays can mean horribly violent predators go free. As if nothing ever happened. This means: no case, no trial, no punishment. This is due to a Canadian court decision to promote speedy trials. And Cait's story of horrific violence took place in Canada. Just imagine suffering brutally, but because the justice system is overburdened, monstrous predators have all charges dropped. Charges like assault of children, intimate partner violence, even murder! Cait's case never saw justice. Nothing at all. But Cait hasn't ended her campaign for reform. EVE, the End Violence Everywhere organization is bringing comprehensive support to today's survivors. WHEN DATING HURTS
254. "Simone" - Pt 2 of 2 Parts - Countless Attempts to Save Horribly Abusive Husband
This is part two of a two-part story. This story comes with warnings about all kinds of drug abuse, alcohol, abuse, plus many situations describing emotional and physical violence. These can be triggering to some. Your number one job is to protect yourself. We are not attempting to be shocking, we are sharing these stories so you can know how bad Domestic Violence can get. Simone lives in Australia. She gets top grades for hanging onto a man no matter what she faced with him. "Ben" gave her every reason to call it quits, to drop him, and move far away. But she was determined to save him, no matter what. She was completely devoted to fixing Ben and saving their marriage, but like every "fixer" thus far on this WHEN DATING HURTS podcast, she got more than she ever imagined. None of it good. Simone managed excellence in every facet of her life, but fixing Ben was beyond her vast capabilities. I don't know many partners who would have given a man this troubled this much grace. ADVICE: If a relationship doesn't feel right from the start, get out early. If you don't know how to get out, ask a domestic violence counselor. The ripple effects of a dangerous relationship can interrupt every facet of your entire life.
