Calling all listeners looking for the best things to do in Portland, Maine this weekend and the week ahead. The city is alive with music, laughter, and unique local happenings, so get ready to fill your calendar.

Tonight, the laughter is non-stop at the State Theatre with two shows from British comedy superstar Jimmy Carr. The early show starts at 7:00 p.m. and the late show at 9:30 p.m., both for ages 16 and up. After a good laugh, night owls can head to Merrill Auditorium where Jon Stewart takes the stage at 10 p.m. for a night of sharp wit and political humor, tickets are available through SeatGeek and other outlets.

On Sunday, the State Theatre hosts a special event called Save Absentee Voting, with live performances from The Ballroom Thieves and Griffin William Sherry. This free event is all ages and starts at 1 p.m., but make sure you RSVP in advance through the State Theatre’s website.

Next Saturday, November 8, metal heroes Trivium return to Cross Insurance Arena for their headlining tour, joined by special guests Jinjer and Heriot. According to WCYY, this night will feature favorites from the landmark Ascendancy album and new tracks, and tickets can still be snagged.

Over at State Theatre on the same night, The Lone Bellow brings their harmonies to town with opener Caroline Spence, doors at 7 p.m. and show at 8 p.m.

And don’t forget to explore Portland’s Halloween season wrap-up. Minibar is hosting a Halloween Party with putt-and-treat stations from 3 to 6 p.m., great for kids of all ages, as shared by Portland Old Port. If you’re up for something spooky just south in Old Orchard Beach, Haunted Adventure Mini Golf runs during the day.
