In August 2020, Geraldine, her husband John, and their two children—14-year-old Tomás and 6-year-old Amelia—were making their way back home to Moville, Donegal, after a family trip to Derry.Due to adverse weather conditions, their car careered off the road and ended up in the River Foyle.
