Episode 21 - Journey through the Salkantay Pass: Day 2

The journey of the Salkantay Trek to Macchu Picchu marked its highest point at the Salkantay Pass on Day 2. That day, the trail began at Soraypampa (1,263 ft / 3,850 m) and ended at Collpapampa (9,842 ft / 3,000 m). It was the longest hike of the adventure, with 13.5 miles / 21.2 km traversed along more or less eleven hours.

Day 2 also had the highest point of the trek - literally.  Situated at an altitude of 15,090 ft / 4,600 m, the Salkantay Pass is above the point of where vegetation grows. It looked and felt as if being on the moon (at least, based on the pictures we've seen). Coming down from the Pass gave us a chance to walk above and amongst the clouds as we walked through a cloud forest. If you want to hear about what it's like to walk in the clouds, listen to this podcast for more details.
