Carwyn Jones and the Wales and Africa Programme | Episode 15
In this episode, I’m pleased to be joined by former First Minister of Wales, Carwyn Jones. In his career, he played a pivotal role in the inception of the Wales and Africa Programme, and his insights will shed light on the vision that shaped it, its achievements, and the threats it faces in an increasingly divided world. He recently stepped down as Chair of Size of Wales after four years of service. In March of this year, he was made a member of the House of Lords, as The Rt Hon. the Lord Jones of Penybont. In this episode, we explored the origins and ongoing significance of the Welsh Government’s Wales and Africa Programme, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. We also discussed the current political landscape, where the rise of far-right movements and decisions like the halving of the UK’s overseas aid budget pose significant challenges to international development and global solidarity. Later on, our regular segment of Africa this Week looked at the youth-led protests in Kenya, the death of former President of Nigeria Muhammadu Buhari and finally the Rugby Africa Cup took place in Kampala, Uganda. Hub Cymru Africa is Wales’ leading international development and global solidarity organisation. We support organisations across Wales in building sustainable links and projects in partnership with organisations in Africa and beyond.
