The Witches of Venegono – A Witch Hunt Before the Inquisition
In the early 1500s, long before the Holy Inquisition was officially established, a small village in Northern Italy became the scene of a chilling witch trial. In Venegono Superiore, seven women were accused of witchcraft, imprisoned in the castle still standing above the town, and sentenced to die by fire. Tortured, judged, and condemned — not by history’s better-known tribunals, but by local forces in the region of Seprio, Lombardy. This haunting story reminds us how, sometimes, shadows take over before the world even realizes it’s gone dark.
