வள்ளுவர் பார்வையில் நட்பு:
மனிதன் மற்றவர்களோடு கூடி வாழும் இயல்பும் அன்பும் உடையவன். ஒருவன் தன் உறவினர்களோடும் மற்றவர்களோடும் அன்பாகப் பழகுவதைப் பார்ப்பவர்களுக்கு அவனோடு பழகவேண்டும் என்ற ஆர்வம் உண்டாகும். அந்த ஆர்வத்தால் அவர்களுக்கும் அவனுக்கும்
இடையே நட்பு உண்டாகும். நன்கு ஆராய்ந்த பின்னர்தான் ஒருவரை நண்பராக்கிக்கொள்ள வேண்டும் என்பது வள்ளுவரின் கருத்து. எவ்வளவு ஆராய்ந்தாலும், சில சமயங்களில், ஒருவர் நல்லவரா அல்லது தீயவரா என்று கண்டுபிடிக்க முடியாது. சில காலம் பழகிய பின்னர்தான் ஒருவர் நல்லவரா இல்லையா என்பதைத் தெரிந்துகொள்ள முடியும். நண்பராக இருப்பவர் தீயவர் என்று தெரிந்தவுடன், அவருடன் உள்ள நட்பைக் குறைத்துக்கொள்ள வேண்டும். முடிந்தால், அந்த நட்பிலிருந்து விலக வேண்டும். சில சூழ்நிலைகளில், பகைவர்கள் நண்பர்களைப்போல் நடிக்கலாம். அத்தகைய நட்பில், உள்ளத்தில் ஒற்றுமை இல்லாததால் அதைக் கூடா நட்பு என்கிறார் வள்ளுவர். கூடா நட்பில், நாமும் நண்பர்களைப்போல் நடித்து உள்ளத்தில் நட்புக்கொள்ளாமல் அவர்களோடு உள்ள நட்பை நீக்கிவிட வேண்டும். தனிமனிதர்களுக்கு எப்படி நட்பு தேவையோ, அதுபோல் நாடுகளுக்கும் நட்பு தேவை.
Human beings are capable of loving other human beings and establishing social relationships
with them. When people see a person showing love towards others, even those who are not
associated with him would like to develop his friendship. Valluvar is of the opinion that one
should develop friendships with people only after carefully analyzing their character. No matter
how much analysis is done, sometimes, one cannot find out the true nature of others. Only
after moving for a while, can one know the true character of his friends. Once one knows that a
friend does not have desirable qualities, Valluvar calls friendship with him as bad friendship. If
possible, one should withdraw from or terminate such friendships. In some situations, enemies
may pretend to be friends. Valluvar calls it undesirable friendship because there is no unity in
the heart. In such cases, one should pretend like friends and end the friendship with such
people. Just as individuals need friendship, nations also need friendships with other nations.
