S1 E1.00 Dr. Nixon Observes Victorians
Hello Lovely Vicies and Victors, Im glad you found your way over here to the Victorian Periodical Parade Welcome to the first reading of the Cornhill magazine. My name is Owen Curtiss and I will be assisting Dr. Kari Nixon by reading the fiction portions of the 1862  bound annual edition. This is a nice collection of literature that connects present day folks to the Victorians of a 160 years ago. Here Kari reads an article from the May issue of the 1862 edition of the Cornhill Magazine. She breaks down what the writings mean, why they are in general critiquing their peers, and when a paragraph is a veiled joke. Next I will be going back to the beginning of said May issue; where the first reading will be a segment of a Thackeray novel called The Adventures of Phillip On His Way Through The World and Thackeray was the editor of the Cornhill magazine. That is why, dear listener, his novel got to be publisher here in the early years of the magazine. People often would buy the magazine subscription so that they could read the book throughout the year. Said novel would be broken up into installments, with the rest of the magazine being made up of other stories or articles which would be a bonus for those who bought the magazine to read the novel. I have heard of other such publications that present a novel over the span of a year or so and I have been intrigued by them. I have actually purchased one such magazine, made up of short stories, in the podcasts inaugural summer.  So I am excited to read something similar to those rich, victorian days gone by. Since we are starting these readings off, alongside Kari's article and breakdowns in May, some of you dear listeners will be petrified to hear that we will be starting off in chapter 35 of The Adventures of Phillip On His Way Through The World with Res Angusta Domi, next time. Now, we’ll see how far we get in fifteen minutes. I hope you enjoy, hobey ho lets go.
