Established by Tinka Tinka Foundation, District Jail Faridabad was among the three jails in the state of Haryana that pioneered Tinka’s jail radio movement in January 2021. The episode presents before the public the musical talent of 68-years old inmate Gajendra alias Baba. It was in his moments of isolation and despair behind prison walls that he found solace in jail radio, music and creativity. A former singer at All India Radio, Indore, Gajendra was greatly attracted to the newly established prison radio set-up in the barracks and embarked on his magnificent musical journey. He has never looked back since. Through this episode, Tinka Tinka expresses immense gratitude towards Jail Superintendent Jai Kishan Chhillar for his constant motivation and support in bringing jail radio to Faridabad. In Chhillar’s own words, “Jail Radio in the prison complex has greatly transformed the lives of inmates and has brought them light and hope for the future.” Tinka Tinka Foundation is the brainchild of media educator and prison reformer, Dr. Vartika Nanda. Tinka Tinka is dedicated to giving a platform to the inmates in Indian jails where they can freely voice themselves. The organisation has also been praised for its efforts to bring literacy, skill development and provide human rights to the prisoners. Dr. Vartika Nanda is also credited for bringing Jail Radio to the state of Haryana. Jail Radios have played a huge role in bringing about a positive change in the Jail community. Jail Radios are responsible for providing a new cultural life to the inmates. It has offered the inmates a medium to share their emotions, thoughts and musical expressions with the society. Her significant projects with Tihar Prison Complex, District Jail Dasna, District Jail Agra, Madhya Pradesh, and Haryana have positively changed the prison atmosphere, fulfilling their communication needs and paving the way to reformation. Dr. Vartika Nanda has also authored three books on prison reforms-Tinka Tinka Tihar, Tinka Tinka Dasna, and Tinka Tinka Madhya Pradesh.These books are considered to be masterpieces on life inside jails.These books on prisons are authentic versions of prison life which aids in leading the inmates to a better future. She was conferred with Stree Shakti Puraskar by the President of India in 2014 and has been included twice in the Limca Book of Records for her work.
