Unveiling a Trailblazer: The James Smart Chronicles — Part 1

In this episode of our Podcast, we journey through the life of a formidable figure in the Kenyan media landscape, James Smart. Born amidst the humble settings of Korogocho slums in Nairobi, James's narrative is a stirring testimony to the transformative power of education and an unwavering resolve. Raised by his doting grandmother, Priscah Atengo, James trudged through the early stages of his education at Baba Dogo Primary School, before advancing to St. Paul’s Lugari Boys’ High School in Kakamega. His academic pursuit did not wane, as he later attended Tangaza College in Nairobi for a course in Mass Communication, and further honed his journalistic prowess at Cardiff University in Wales, UK, with a Master's Degree in International Journalism, facilitated by a prestigious Chevening Scholarship. James Smart's career trajectory commenced at 98.4 Capital FM where he served as a news anchor from 2007 to 2009. His foray into television journalism saw him anchoring at NTV, a stint interrupted briefly as he transitioned to KTN, only to return and grace the NTV screens. His journalistic odyssey is punctuated with a notable stint at the BBC, where he collaborated to birth the 'Focus on Africa' broadcast, a seminal program shedding light on diverse African narratives. His current designation as the Nation Africa Managing Editor - Newsroom Production is a testament to his burgeoning career. Still, it's his role as a senior English News Anchor with NTV Kenya that many viewers resonate with. His hosting of the popular TV show "With All Due Respect", and the pioneering of 'The Trend' show on NTV, showcased his aptitude in moderating political discussions, a skill that endeared him to many and established him as a household name in Kenyan journalism. James's upbringing in Korogocho, a place synonymous with gang life and crime, is not just a backdrop to his life story, but a catalyst for his deep-rooted advocacy for social justice and good governance. His narrative underscores the transformative arc from a life of scarcity to one of significant societal influence, a journey that inspires and underscores the essence of resilience, education, and a bit of fortune. Join us, as we delve deeper into James Smart's world, shedding light on his relentless advocacy for good governance in Kenya and Africa, his illustrious career, and the indelible mark he continues to etch in the annals of journalism and social justice advocacy. Through the lens of James Smart, we explore the quintessential narrative of triumph over adversity and the boundless potential that lies in a blend of education, passion, and a heart anchored on societal transformation.
