How We Defend Ourselves in a Relationship

So today, I am going to share some archetypes and models that explain how we defend ourselves in a relationship. I will use Barbara Ann Brennan's first book, Hands Of Light. She has a few diagrams and models on 'how we use' different defense mechanisms based on our childhood traumas.


I will share my 'personal archetypes' that I defend myself with when I feel threatened. I also show how my partner and wife use hers to protect. It's a great way to see how our lower selves can feed each other.


Most of these models are not who we are but rather how we defend ourselves. It's a great exercise to understand because even if you don't use these models to protect yourself in a relationship, you can learn how people around you might be doing it to you.


Understanding how people use defense mechanisms makes one better at disarming someone when they are threatened.
